Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Mike Smith

Women's Basketball Downs Independence in Road KJCCC Affair

Dodge City women's basketball made it six straight wins as they come out of the holiday break and take down Independence 73-53 on the road.

The Conquistadors with the win improve 13-2 on the season and 8-1 in KJCCC action.

It was a sluggish start to the contest offensively for both teams but the Conqs worked to an early 6-0 advantage to open the game over the first two minutes. Independence responded and closed the first quarter on a 5-0 spurt to make it 13-10 Conqs after one frame. In the second quarter the Conqs took their first double figure lead on a Leah Mafua three-pointer to make it 24-14 but the lead was just six at halftime at 33-27. The Conqs would continue to hold Independence off in the third quarter and by the end of the third led 49-36. Conqs would post a 24-17 fourth quarter and 40-23 second half to ultimately secure the lopsided road win 73-53 over the Pirates.

Conqs defensively held Independence to just 27.3% from the floor and 16.7% from three-point range, while shooting 46.7% from the floor themselves. Turnovers were an issue for both teams as each team tallied 22 in the contest.

Jenna Rose Mafua paced the Conqs with 16 points going 4-9 from three-point range, while Shakara Anderson chipped in 12 points off the bench add grabbed eight rebounds, while tallying six steals. Jada Burton posted a strong stat line with 11 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Leah Mafua finished with nine points, while Georgia Gray scored seven points and grabbed eight rebounds.

The Conqs will be back in action on Saturday, January 7th at 1:00 pm when they host Colby.
