Men's Basketball Overcomes Adversity on the Road to Snag Double Overtime Win Over Independence

Dodge City men's basketball overcame plenty of adversity and sluggish offense on the road in KJCCC action to claim an 89-85 double overtime win over Independence.

The Conquistadors who trailed nearly all of regulation improved to 12-3 overall and 8-1 in KJCCC action with the win.

Falling behind early the Conqs trailed 6-4 when the Pirates of Independence would go on a 10-0 run to lead 16-4 with 11:35 left in the first half. The Conqs pushed back and mounted a 13-0 run of their own to give themselves a brief 17-16 lead, which would prove to be the only Dodge City lead in regulation time in the contest. That 17-16 lead was short lived as the Independence responded with a 6-0 run and then would continue to hold the Conqs at bay all the way to halftime as the Pirates led 36-32. In the second half the Conqs would make several pushes getting within one-point several times, but it wasn't until late the Conqs were finally able to tie the contest. DJ Jones made a layup to make it a one-point game and then an offensive foul by the PIrates gave the ball back to the Conqs and then another foul followed, and Jones split a pair of free throws to tie the game at 67-67 in the final seconds of regulation. Independence missed a potential game winner, and the game went to overtime in overtime both teams held the advantage and Independence once again had a chance to win the game with the final shot but misfired pushing the game to a second overtime. With 1:30 left in the second overtime the Conqs grabbed the lead and managed to hold off Independence to secure the 89-85 victory.

The Conqs finished the night shooting 45.9% from the floor and overcame 18 turnovers and just an 18-29 performance from the free throw line.

Five guys finished in double figures for the Conqs led by Jason Edwards who tallied 23 points on 8-16 shooting and went 6-6 from the free throw line adding six rebounds. Chris Robinson added 21 points on 9-17 shooting with six rebounds, while Cam Malray chipped in 15 points. Jacobi Sebock finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double and also had six assists, while Jones tallied 10 points.

Conqs keep the season rolling on Saturday, January 7th at home against Colby at 3:00 pm.
