Dodge City women's basketball continues to rack up the wins picking up their 18th of the season on the road on Wednesday using a strong second half to work past Coffeyville 73-66.
The Conquistadors with the win improved to 18-2 on the season and 13-1 in KJCCC action while stretching their win streak to 11-straight.
Conqs opened the game on a 9-0 spurt forcing an early Coffeyville timeout. Out of the timeout, the Red Ravens responded in a big way to outscore the Conqs 15-6 the rest of the first quarter leading to a 15-15 tie after the first 10 minutes. The three-pointers continued to fall in the second quarter for Coffeyville who hit eight in the first half and ultimately led to the Conqs trailing 40-31 at halftime. A quick 5-0 run to open the second half got things rolling for the Conqs and ultimately a 20-10 third quarter helped the Conqs take control the lead 51-50 entering the fourth quarter. Conqs would have answers for Coffeyville in the fourth quarter and push ahead late by two possessions and secure the game with some solid defense and free throws to win 73-66.
The Conqs shot just 35.3% from the floor but ultimately held Coffeyville to 34.9% from the floor including under 30% in the second half. Conqs finished the night with only nine turnovers and went 11-12 from the free-throw line.
Jenna Rose Mafua paced the Conqs with 18 points hitting four three-pointers, while
Bree Stephens tallied 16 points with four rebounds.
Leah Mafua added 14 points with six rebounds and three assists.
Jada Burton chipped in nine points and grabbed seven rebounds while dishing out four assists.
The season continues for the Conqs on Saturday, January 28th at home as they will host Seward County at 1:00 pm.
