Looking to bounce back after a tough road loss the Dodge City men's basketball team ran into a feisty Cowley Tigers team and would drop their second straight contest falling 79-74.
The loss moves the Conquistadors to 14-5 on the season and 10-3 in KJCCC action, and the game is the tenth in the last 14 meetings with the Tigers that has been decided by single digits.
The Conqs saw Cowley pounce early on the road knocking down multiple shots from outside the arc and working to a 14-4 lead which led to a Conqs timeout. Out of the timeout the Conqs would respond mounting a 12-4 run to knot the game up at 18-18 with just under 15 minutes remaining in the first half. Cowley countered that run with a 14-2 run of their own to go up 32-20 with just under 10 minutes left in the first half and the Tigers would carry a 46-33 advantage into halftime. In the second half the Conqs would push back against the Tigers but the lead continued to sit at double figures until late in the contest as the Conqs tied the game up at 68-68 in the final minutes. Cowley went on a 6-0 once the Conqs had tied the game up and the Tigers would hold off the Conqs hitting free throws in the final minute leading to the 79-74 final.
Conqs in the loss shot 43.9% while Cowley finished 45.9% from the field hitting 10 three-pointers.
DJ Jones in the loss finished with 22 points on 8-13 shooting to lead the Conqs adding six rebounds, while
Jason Edwards tallied 21 points on 7-11 shooting going 4-7 from three-point range and 3-3 from the charity stripe, adding five rebounds, two assists, four steals.
Chris Robinson added 16 points with five assists.
The Conqs will look to get back in the win column as they hit the road next week for a tough battle with #16 Coffeyville on Wednesday, January 25
th at 7:30 pm.
