Dodge City baseball team wrapped up the regular season with a tough four-game series against the Hutchinson Blue Dragons, dropping all four games by scores of 11-9, 17-8, 11-8, and 13-2.
The Conquistadors finish the regular season with a 28-25 record and finish 15-17 in the KJCCC West finishing sixth in the division. The 15 conference wins is the most the 2018.
Conqs will now continue their season in the Region VI tournament as they will be on the road in the first round taking on Johnson County from the KJCCC East division. The first round of the Region VI Tournament will be a best of three series on May 11
th-13
th with the winner advancing to bracket play in Manhattan.
Game 1 – vs Hutchinson Lost 11-9
It was early runs for both teams to open the final regular season series for both the Conqs and their opponents the Hutchinson Blue Dragons. Hutchinson tallied a run on a solo home run in the top of the first but the Conqs countered scoring three runs as
Kory Schmidt belted a two-run home run and
Jake Miller followed with a solo homer. In the third the Conqs added to their lead as Miller recorded a two RBI double and
Cale Blasi added an RBI double also to make it 6-1. Hutch would score the next eight runs with five in the fourth to tie the game and then a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to lead 9-6.
James Dunlap notched an RBI single in the sixth and then Schmidt hit his second home run of the game in the seventh, followed by a sacrifice fly by Dunlap in the seventh to score another run tying the game up 9-9, while the Conqs would have a chance to win the game, but
Zandt Payne was thrown out at home sending the game to extra innings. In the eighth Hutchinson tallied a pair of runs and would take the game 11-9.
In the loss Dunlap was 3-5 with two runs scored, a double, and RBI, while Miller went 3-4 with three runs scored, three RBI, a double, and home run. Schmidt finished 2-3 with three runs scored, three RBI, two home runs, and a walk. On the mound
Shea Walker tossed 3.2 innings, while
Diego Dominguez finished the game throwing 4.1 innings of relief.
Game 2 – vs Hutchinson Lost 17-8
After a scoreless first two innings in game two Hutchinson would be the first to break through with runs as the Blue Dragons tallied two in the third and three in the fourth to lead 5-0. The Conqs responded in the bottom of the fifth scoring four runs to tighten the gap to just one with a two RBI single by
Caden Matlon highlighting the inning. Hutchinson answered with five runs in the sixth, but the Conqs got a four-spot again as Payne had a two RBI double and Schmidt added a two RBI single in the bottom of the sixth. Hutchinson put the game out of reach in the seventh by scoring seven runs to finish the contest 17-8.
Two-hit games for Payne,
Nathan Szymanski, and Schmidt paced the Conqs offense in the loss. Payne was 2-5 with two runs scored, two RBI, and a double. While Szymanski finished 2-3 with two runs scored, stolen base, and a walk. Schmidt went 2-4 with two RBI and a double.
Zack Robinson took the loss tossing 3.1 innings as the starter, while
Adam Walker,
Jacob Loflin, and
Justin Dunlap all saw action on the mound.
Game 3 – vs Hutchinson Lost 11-8
Just like the first game in Dodge City the first game of the doubleheader in Hutchinson featured early runs by both teams. The Conqs used RBI singles by Miller and Matlon to plate two runs but Hutchinson answered with three runs. In the top of the second Miller once again got the scoring going for the Conqs on a single as Szymanski scored on play aided by a Blue Dragon error; two more runs scored in the inning and the Conqs led 5-3. After a Blue Dragon run in the third the Conqs got one in the fourth and fifth inning each but Hutchinson would score four rin the fifth and three in the sixth to take the game 11-8.
Miller continued to be hot at the plate for the Conqs going 3-4 with four RBI, a home run, and two runs scored. Matlon chipped in a 2-2 performance with two RBI, a run scored, walk, and home run. On the mound
Blake Anderson tossed four innings as the starter, while
Kyle Gscheidle and
Justus Revill both saw action.
Game 4 – vs Hutchinson Lost 13-2
The series finale it was early and often offense for Hutchinson as they took the early lead and would score in every half inning at least one run with a five run second and four run fourth being the big outputs. The Conqs managed a run in the fifth and another in the sixth but the offense was limited in the contest.
Braden Dedrirck went 1-3 for the Conqs with a home run, while
Cole Mungia had a hit and
Justin Dunlap went 1-3 with a run scored and a double.
Tristan Wolf,
Mathis Mauldin, and
Erubiel Duron each pitched for the Conqs in the loss.
