Softball Takes Game Two Over Barton to Split Doubleheader

In the final home games of the regular season, the Dodge City softball team played to a doubleheader split against Barton falling 11-1 in game one in five innings and bouncing back with a 10-7 win in game two. 

The win in game two snapped a four-game losing streak to the Cougars while the split moved the Conquistadors to 20-24 on the season and 14-15 in KJCCC action. 

Conqs are set to wrap up the regular season on the road on Friday, April 29th in El Dorado against Butler for a doubleheader slated to start at 2:00 pm. 

Game 1 – vs Barton Lost 11-1 (5 innings) 
It was early offense by Barton that put the Conqs behind early and the hill continued to get steeper during the game to climb up for a comeback. Barton tallied three runs in the first and then added two more in the third before the Conqs broke through in the bottom of the third. Melanie Castro hit her eighth triple of the season which ties her for the most career triples in school history, she would come into score on a bunt single by Ollievia Lowe. Barton tacked on another run in the fourth and then posted five runs in the top of the fifth putting the Conqs in a must score situation in the bottom of the fifth. Conqs worked a pair of base runners on but was unable to score in the bottom of the fifth falling 11-1 in five innings. 

In the loss, AJ Poell was 2-2, while Castro went 1-3 with a run scored and triple. Riley Haney was 1-3 with a double and Lowe was 1-3 with an RBI and walk. 

Game 2 – vs Barton Won 10-7 
The second game of the day started much like the first as Barton took the early advantage against the Conqs scoring a run in the first and three more in the second to lead 4-0. After a one-two-three inning defensively in the top of the third, the Conqs bats came alive in the bottom of the third as eight batters came to the plate. The Conqs would score five in the bottom of the third highlighted by RBI singles from Alicyn O'Neill and Addison Spencer each and then a three-run home run by Stephanie Torres giving the Conqs a 5-4 lead. Barton countered the Conqs output in the third with a three-run top of the fourth to regain the lead at 7-5. Conqs closed to within one in the bottom of the fourth as Kalei Villegas notched a double and scored on a Castro RBI single. The lead flipped back to the Conqs in the fifth when three runs were scored with an RBI single from Jennifer Katz highlighting the inning and the Conqs added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI triple from Haney and secure the 10-7 victory. 

Alexis Holman comes into pitch in the fourth and shuts down Barton giving up just one hit over four innings of work facing 12 batters and earning the win. 

At the plate Villegas was 2-3 with two runs scored and a double, while Haney was 3-4 with two doubles, a triple, two runs scored, and an RBI. O'Neill had an RBI single and was hit by a pitch, while Katz added a walk, run scored, and RBI single.
