Softball Uses Grand Slam to Earn Win at Seward & Splits Doubleheader

After playing on Wednesday the Dodge City softball team hit the road on Thursday for a makeup doubleheader with Seward County and played to the split with the Saints. The Conquistadors claimed a game one 4-1 win and fell 10-4 in game two.

The split moves the Conqs to 19-23 overall on the season and 13-15 in KJCCC action.

Conqs have just two remaining doubleheaders this season as they will host Barton on Wednesday, April 27thand then travel to Butler on Friday, April 29th to wrap up the regular season.

Game 1 – at Seward County Won 4-1
Looking to get back in the win column and snap a 6-game losing streak on the season and in the series against Seward the Conqs accomplished that with a game 4-1 win. After a scoreless first three innings of action the Conqs broke through in the top of the fourth working the bases loaded on a Riley Haney double, Addison Spencer reaching safely on an error, and then Hadlee Richardson getting on base via a walk and with the bases loaded Stephanie Torres stepped to the plate and belted a grand slam to give the Conqs the 4-0 lead. Seward would scratch a run across in the bottom of the fifth but would be unable to get any more and the Conqs grabbed the 4-1 game one win.

Alexis Holman was strong inside the circle tossing all seven innings to earn the win giving up just one run on six hits, two walks, and a hit batter while striking out three. Offensively the Conqs were led by Haney who went 2-4 with a run scored and double, along with a 2-4 performance by Spencer who also had a run scored. Torres finished 1-4 with the grand slam and AJ Poell and Kalei Villegas each recorded a hit.

Game 2 – at Seward County Lost 10-4
Second game saw Seward score first with a run in the bottom of the first but the Conqs answered tallying a pair of runs in the top of the second taking advantage of some miscues by Seward to lead 2-1. Seward countered with a run in bottom of the second to tie the game and then plated three in the third and one in the fourth to own a 6-2 lead. Conqs manufactured two more runs in the top of the fifth as Haney brought in Melanie Castro on a sac-fly and then Spencer hit a single to lead to Poell scoring to draw the Conqs to within two at 6-4. Seward would tally two runs in the fifth themselves and two more in the sixth leading to them taking game two 10-4.

Offensively Spencer led the Conqs again going 2-4 with a double and RBI, while Castro was 1-2 with a run scored and two walks. Haney and Jennifer Katz each had a hit and an RBI, while Torres added a hit and run scored.
