Dodge City softball hosted Colby for a KJCCC doubleheader on Wednesday and dropped a pair of tough games falling 9-1 in game one in six innings and losing game two 9-6.
The pair of losses send the Conquistadors to 18-22 on the season and 12-14 in KJCCC play.
Up next the Conqs are back in action on Thursday, April 21st as they will hit the road for a doubleheader in Liberal against Seward County.
Game 1 – vs Colby lost 9-1 (six innings)
The Conqs saw Colby take the early lead in game one by capitalizing on a hit to lead off the game scoring one run in the first and then the Trojans added two more in the second inning taking advantage of some Conq errors to make it 3-0. In the bottom of the second, the Conqs took advantage of an error by Colby as
Riley Haney reached to open the inning, and then an RBI double by
Addison Spencer brought in Haney to make it 3-1. Colby would tally a run in the third while the Conqs worked base runners on but would strand a pair in the third and fourth innings. In the top of the sixth Colby would bat around and push their lead to eight at 9-1 behind five runs. The Conqs would open the bottom of the sixth with a single by Spencer and walk by
Hadlee Richardson but would be unable to score falling 9-1.
Spencer finished the game 3-3 to lead the Conqs offensively with a pair of doubles and an RBI, while
Melanie Castro added a 2-3 game. Richardson and
Kalei Villegas each also recorded a hit. In the loss,
Danika Utajara tossed 5.1 innings, while
Alexis Holman also saw action.
Game 2 – vs Colby lost 9-6
Just like game one, Colby scored early to take the initial lead but unlike the first game, the Conqs battled back to own the lead and did so multiple times. The Trojans plated a run in the top of the first, but the Conqs answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first doing so with two outs as Spencer notched a two-RBI double making it 2-1 Conqs after the first inning. Colby answered with a four-run output in the top of the second, but the Conqs would counter with two in the bottom of the frame highlighted by RBI doubles from Castro and
Olivia Ortiz making it 5-4 after two. The lead swung back to the Conqs in the bottom of the third with two runs as
Jennifer Katz had an RBI double and Castro an RBI single in the inning to make it 6-5 Conqs. Colby tied the game at 6-6 with a run in the top of the fourth and it remained tied until the seventh. After both teams had scoring opportunities spoiled prior to the seventh Colby managed to get a three-run homer in the top of the seventh to snag the advantage and went on to take the game 9-6.
In the loss Spencer was strong at the plate going 2-3 with two RBI, a double, two RBI, and a walk, while Castro was 2-5 with two RBI, a run scored, and a double.
AJ Poell added a 2-4 game with a run scored, and Katz was 2-3 with two runs scored, an RBI, walk, and double.
K'Lee Flores tossed all seven innings in the circle for the Conqs in the loss.
