Baseball Splits Home Doubleheader with Colby

Looking to get back in the win the Dodge City baseball team started another KJCCC four-game series this time opening at home against the top team in the KJCCC West Division the Colby Trojans.

The Conquistadors would snap a seven-game losing streak in game one snagging a 6-5 win over the Trojans but would fall in a tough 13-8 battle in game two to the doubleheader split. The spilt moves the Conqs to 15-14 on the season and 6-8 in KJCCC action.

The series continues with Colby on Saturday, April 2nd for a doubleheader on the road in Colby starting at 1:00 pm.

Game 1 – vs Colby Won 6-5
Both teams opened the day with scoring opportunities in the first inning but neither got on the board as the Conqs erased a pair of Trojans base runners from the base pads in the top of the first but then left the bases loaded in the bottom of the first. In the bottom of the third, the Conqs broke through to take the lead scoring two runs with two-outs as Trevor Blackwell notched a double then scored as Kory Schmidt laced a ball to centerfield that the missed played and the error got the Conqs on the board; Caden Matlon then brought in Schmidt with an RBI double of his own. In the fourth, the Conqs added two more runs to make it 4-0. Colby got on the board with a run in the top of the fifth and the Conqs answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth highlighted by a solo home run from Matlon. Colby made it a three-run game with two runs in the sixth and then tacked on two more in the seventh, but the Conqs shut the door to pick up the 6-5 win.

Matlon led the Conqs offense going 2-2 with a double, home run, two RBI, a run scored, and a walk. James Dunlap added an RBI single, while Blackwell had a double and a run scored. Both Weston Symes and Cale Blasi each had a single and run scored. Shea Walker tossed all seven innings to pick up the win on the mound as he struck out 10 in the victory.

Game 2 – vs Colby Lost 13-8
Conqs saw Colby take the lead first in game two creating a hill to climb back from for the Conqs in the contest. Colby batted around in the top of the second scoring eight runs. Conqs broke through in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs highlighted by an RBI double by Nathan Szymanski to make it 8-2 after four innings. Colby responded with five runs in the top of the fifth to push the game to 13-2. Conqs cut the deficit to five behind a pair of three-run home runs in the bottom of the fifth as Jake Miller and Justin Dunlap each blasted a three-run homer. The Conqs despite keeping Colby off the board the rest of the game were unable to get any more offense going and fell 13-8 in game two of the doubleheader.

In the loss, Matlon was 1-2 with a walk, hit by pitch, and two runs scored, while Szymanski was 1-3 with a double, RBI, and run scored. Justin Dunlap and Miller each had a three-run home run. On the mound, Zack Robinson tossed 4.2 innings of scoreless ball giving up just one hit, while Justus Revill started the game and Diego Dominguez and Kyle Gscheidle each saw action on the hill.
