Dodge City baseball team battles with Cloud County in a four-game KJCCC series and comes up on the wrong side of four close ball games falling 3-1 and 10-8 in Concordia and suffering 12-9 and 13-9 losses at home.
The Conquistadors move to 14-13 on the season and 5-7 in KJCCC action with the losses to Cloud County. Conqs will be back in action on March 31st when they open a four-game series against Colby with a doubleheader at home and then travel to Colby for a doubleheader on April 2nd.
Game 1 – Lost 3-1 at Cloud County
The first game of the series would be the one that featured the lowest amount of offense between the Conqs and Thunderbirds of Cloud County. The Conqs struck first scoring in the top of the third as
Trevor Blackwell had an RBI single to score
Zandt Payne. Cloud County countered with a run in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 1-1. Cloud County would tally a two-run home run in the fifth and that would prove to be the difference in the contest as the Conqs fell 3-1.
On the mound,
Shea Walker tossed six innings giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits and no walks, while striking out three. Offensively
Jake Miller was 2-2 with a walk, while
Kyler Copeland,
Weston Symes,
James Dunlap, and
Trevor Blackwell each had a hit.
Game 2 – Lost 10-8 at Cloud County
The second game of the series featured 18 runs and 21 hits between both teams. The Conqs took the early 1-0 lead on a solo home run by
Caden Matlon in the second inning, but Cloud County countered with a run in the bottom of the inning. Conqs would tally runs in the third and fourth and lead 3-1 but Cloud County scored four in the fourth and five in the fifth to take control of the game. The Conqs did not go away scoring a run in the eighth and then in the ninth down to their final three-outs tallied four runs with a three-run homer by Payne and an RBI single by
Trent Trammell but ultimately the comeback ended their falling 10-8.
Miller went 3-4 to lead the offense with a double, RBI, run scored, and walk, while Trammell was 2-5 with two RBI, double, and run scored. Matlon finished 2-4 with a run scored, RBI, and a home run. On the mound
Justus Revill got the spot start tossing four innings, while
Adam Walker tossed four innings also and recorded 10 strikeouts.
Game 3 – Lost 12-9 vs Cloud County
Series moved to Dodge City and the offense continued for both teams, but it was early offense that speared things for the Thunderbirds, and the Conqs despite pushing back were unable to ultimately secure the win. Cloud County went up 5-0 going into the bottom of the third when the Conqs broke through with five runs. Payne blasted a solo home run and Dunlap tattooed a two-run home run to highlight the inning for the Conqs. Cloud County answered with a pair of runs in the fourth and then the Conqs took their first lead behind three runs in the bottom of the fourth highlighted by a two-run home run from Blackwell. After a run in the fifth, the Conqs held a 9-7 lead, but Cloud County tied the game in the sixth with two runs and then scored three runs in the top of the ninth to ultimately take the game 12-9.
Blackwell finished the contest 3-4 with three RBI, two runs scored, a home run, while
Carson Wright was 3-4. Dunlap added a 2-4 game with a home run, two runs scored, and two RBI.
Tristan Wolf,
Zack Robinson, and
Mathis Mauldin all saw action on the mound for the Conqs.
Game 4 – Lost 13-9 vs Cloud County
It was an early lead again for Cloud County as the Conqs fell behind early as the Thunderbirds tallied five runs in the top of the first inning. The Conqs answered with two runs in the bottom of the first including a solo home run by Wright and then an RBI single by Dunlap. Cloud County scored four in the third and the Conqs pushed back with two in the bottom of the inning off a
Kory Schmidt two-run home run. Conqs snagged a run in the fourth but both teams would tally two runs each in the fifth. Thunderbirds added a run in the seventh and the Conqs one in the eighth and both scored in the ninth as Schmidt blasted his second home run of the game, but the Conqs were unable to come back falling 13-9.
Aidan Proctor led the offense going 3-4 with a triple, three runs scored, and an RBI, while Dunlap went 2-5 with run scored and RBI. Schmidt finished 2-4 with two home runs, three runs scored, three RBI, and a walk.
Blake Anderson,

Diego Dominguez all saw action in the mound.
