After a first-round bye in the Region VI Tournament, the Dodge City men's basketball team faced off with Colby in the Quarterfinals in Dodge City and battled the Trojans to an 89-84 victory. The win is the first since the 2014-15 season for the Conquistador men's team in the Quarterfinals of the Region VI tournament.
The win moves the Conqs to 27-4 on the season and the Semifinals of the Region VI Tournament which will be played in Salina, Kansas at the Tony's Event Center on Friday, March 4th. The Conqs will take on Garden City at 3:00 pm in the Semifinals as the Broncbusters beat Coffeyville in their Semifinal; the other Semifinal will feature Hutchinson versus Butler.
After both teams traded a three-point bucket to open the contest the Conqs saw Colby pour in the buckets speared by some early three-pointers and over the first five minutes of action the Conqs found themselves behind 19-3. That lead would however not hold up for the Trojans as the Conqs pushed back and took the lead for the first time at 35-34 on a
Nick Pringle dunk with just over three minutes left in the first half. Conqs would head into halftime leading 42-41 over Colby. In the second half, both teams jousted back-and-forth, but the Conqs maintained the advantage for most of the second half leading by only as high as six and ultimately closed out the game claiming the 89-84 win.
The Conqs shot 54.2% from the floor after starting the game 1-8 and went 8-13 from three-point range and 17-24 from the free-throw line; Colby was strong from the floor shooting 52.4% and went 10-23 from three-point range.
Kalen Williams had one of his best games of the season pouring in 28 points on 9-14 shooting including 4-4 from three-point range and went 6-8 from the free-throw line.
Themus Fulks added a 15 points night, while
Nick Pringle had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Kerwin Prince added 11 points and five rebounds off the bench.
The Conqs continue the season on Friday, March 4th in Salina at the Tony's Pizza Event Center in the Region VI Tournament Semifinals against Garden City at 3:00 pm. With a win, the Conqs would play for the Region VI Championship on Saturday, March 5th in Salina at 8:00 pm against the winner of Hutchinson and Butler.
