Dodge City baseball team after snapping a five-game losing streak to Barton with a 6-5 walk-off win in game one of the four-game series the Conquistadors would drop the next three falling 3-2, 9-1, and 24-3 to Barton to go 1-3 against the Cougars.
The Conqs are now 14-9 on the season and 5-3 in conference play as they will get back to action next Thursday, March 24th on the road against Cloud County and then host Cloud County Saturday, March 26th.
Game 1 – Won 6-5 vs Barton
The series opened with early and often scoring by both teams in the first game as Barton plated a run in the top of the first, but the Conqs answered with three in the bottom of the first. After back-to-back singles by
Weston Symes and
James Dunlap to open the bottom of the first
Trevor Blackwell would follow with an RBI single. A walk by
Kory Schmidt loaded the bases and
Caden Matlon drew a walk to bring in the second run for the Conqs in the first inning and then
Carson Wright registered an RBI single to make it 3-1. Barton tied it with two runs in the top of the second, but the Conqs answered with a run in the bottom of the inning and then both teams tallied a run in the third inning. Barton would once again tie the game in the top of the sixth and the game went to the bottom the seventh tied up at 5-5. Three singles to open the bottom of the seven loaded the bases for the Conqs and then with one out
Trent Trammell hit a ball hard to third base and it was bobbled and the Conqs would score on the error to claim the 6-5 win.
Dunlap led the Conqs offense going 3-4 with an RBI and run scored, while Symes was 2-4 with a triple and two runs scored. Blackwell added a 2-4 performance with a run scored and RBI. On the mound,
Tristan Wolf despite giving up five runs was solid in six innings as he gave up six hits and four walks and struck out four.
Zack Robinson tossed a one-two-three top of the seventh recording two strikeouts and earned the win in relief.
Game 2 – Lost 3-2 vs Barton
The second game of the day saw a pitching duel and it would take until the fourth inning to see runs in the game. The Conqs would have a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the second but were unable to score and Barton would score first with a run in the top of the fourth. Conqs answered the Cougars in the bottom of the fourth behind a two-run home run by
Cale Blasi. Barton tied the game up in the top of the fifth with a run and then took the lead in the sixth with a run. The Conqs had a few opportunities over the course of the remainder of the game but ultimately fell 3-2.
In the loss,
Carson Wright finished 2-3 with a walk and stolen base, while Blasi was 1-4 with a home run, two RBI, and run scored.
Blake Anderson tossed six innings as the starter giving up just three runs on four hits, no walks, and struck out eight. In relief,
Diego Dominguez tossed three scoreless innings tallying three strikeouts.
Game 3 – Lost 9-1 at Barton
It was an early deficit for the Conqs in game three of the series, the first game at Great Bend on Saturday as Barton took advantage early. Barton tallied four in the first, three in the second, and another in the third, while the Conqs during that time only managed one run in the top of the third on a Dunlap triple. Barton tagged the Conqs for one more run in the sixth and the Conqs finished the game falling 9-1.
Dunlap, Schmidt, and
Jake Miller each had a hit to account for the Conqs' only three hits of the game. On the mound, the Conqs went to the bullpen early as
Mathis Mauldin highlighted things for the Conqs with three and two-thirds innings of strong pitching giving up just one run on one hit and four walks while striking out six.
Game 4 – Lost 24-3 at Barton
For the first time, all series the Conqs took the initial lead of a game scoring two runs in the top of the first inning as Dunlap had a two-RBI single scoring Blasi and Symes, but Barton answered in the bottom of the first with two runs. Barton would continue to score adding four in the second and three in third, but the Conqs got one back on an RBI fielder's choice by
Erubiel Duron in the fourth. However, Barton blew the game wide open with 15 runs in the fifth inning and the game ended 24-3 in seven innings.
Dunlap was 3-3 with two RBI and a walk for the Conqs, while both Symes and
Donnie Rhyne each had a double in the contest. Duron finished 1-3 with an RBI. On the mound, five different Conqs made an appearance in the loss.
