The Dodge City baseball team opened KJCCC play in a big way breaking out the brooms for a four-game series sweep of Seward County. The Conquistadors opened the series with 10-3 and 5-2 wins at home over the Saints and then followed on Sunday with 10-9 and 15-5 victories.
The Conqs would not only snap a nine-game losing streak against the Saints but win their first doubleheader and series against Seward since 2017, while getting a KJCCC series sweep for the first time since 2017, also.
The wins start Conference play 4-0 for the Conqs and move them to 13-6 on the season.
Conqs are back in action in more KJCCC action on Thursday, March 17th when they host Barton for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 pm.
Game 1 – vs Seward County (Won 10-3)
The day started with both teams sitting each other down in order in the first inning but in the second the Conqs after retiring the side in order in the top of the first got the bats rolling to take the initial lead. A hitter batter and double got a pair of runners on for the Conqs and
Weston Symes blasted his fourth home run of the season giving Dodge City a 3-0 lead. Seward answered with a pair of runs in the top of the third, but the Conqs would expand the lead by batting around in the fourth and tallying five runs. The fourth was highlighted by a two-RBI single by
Jake Miller and an RBI single by
James Dunlap. Conqs added a run in the fifth and another in the sixth and while Seward got a run in the top of the seventh that was all they mustered and the Conqs took the game 10-3 to end a nine-game losing streak to the Saints.
On the mound,
Shea Walker was spectacular again tossing six innings to earn the win giving up just two runs on three hits and one walk, while striking out seven. Mathis Maudlin tossed the final inning of the contest.
Offensively Symes helped pace a 12-hit attack for the Conqs as he was 2-3 with a three-run home run, walk, and two runs scored. Miller went 2-3 with two RBI, two runs scored, a double, and hit by pitch. Dunlap,
Aidan Proctor, and
Camden Thrailkill each all had two hits in the win.
Game 2 – vs Seward County (Won 5-2)
The Conqs look to get on the board first in game two but would ultimately leave the bases loaded in the bottom of the second and Seward then plated a run in the top of the third to take the 1-0 lead. Seward added another run in the top of the fourth to make it 2-0 and it remained that score until the bottom of the seventh inning. In the seventh, the Conqs tallied five runs to snag the lead.
Kyler Copeland led the inning off with a double and came into score on an RBI single by Symes and then a two-RBI single by Dunlap gave the Conqs a 3-2 lead.
Trevor Blackwell added to the Conqs lead with his fifth home run of the season blasting a two-run shot. Conqs shut the door the rest of the game and earned the 5-2 win.
Pitching was strong again for the Conqs as
Blake Anderson started the contest going six innings giving up just two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out seven.
Diego Dominguez earned the win in relief tossing three innings as he did not surrender a run and gave up just three hits and struck out seven.
Conqs had 11-hits in the win as Blackwell helped lead the charge going 2-3 with a double, home run, run scored, walk, and two RBI.
Caden Matlon was 2-4 with a triple, while
Trent Trammell was 2-3 with a walk. Both Copeland and Symes had a hit and walk in the contest.
Game 3 – at Seward County (Won 10-9 in 8 innings)
The offense came early for the Conqs in Liberal as they plated three runs in the first inning highlighted by an RBI double from Blackwell and a
Carson Wright RBI single. Over the next three innings, the Conqs would score one run in each frame including a
Weston Symes solo home run in the fourth and after four innings the Conqs led 5-1. Both teams scored two runs in the fifth and the Conqs got another run in the top of the sixth but then Seward flipped the game with a six-run bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 9-9. The game would enter extra innings and in the top of the eight Wright led off for the Conqs with a single and would score on a
Justin Dunlap double and that proved to be enough for the Conqs to earn the 10-9 win.
Six different Conqs had a multi-hit game as the Conqs as a team put together 16 hits in the win. Wright paced the Conqs offense with a 4-5 performance with two runs scored, two RBI, and a double.
Justin Dunlap was 2-2 with two RBI and a double, while Trammell had two hits as did
Donnie Rhyne. Symes finished 2-5 with three runs scored, an RBI, home run, and double, while Blackwell was 2-2 with a run scored, two RBI, a walk, and double.
On the mound,
Tristan Wolf was strong as the starter going five innings giving up three runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out seven.
Justus Revill earned the win in relief tossing two and two-thirds innings.
Game 4 – at Seward County (Won 15-5 in 6 innings)
The sticks remained hot for the Conqs in the final game of the series as the scoring started early and came often again against the Saints. The Conqs behind RBI singles from
Kory Schmidt and Miller along with a two-RBI triple by Matlon scored five runs in the first inning to take control early versus Seward. Conqs tacked on another run in the second, then two more in the third highlighted by a
Justin Dunlap RBI triple, and two more in the fifth on a two-RBI Rhyne double leading 10-0 before Seward scored. Seward got a run in the bottom of the fifth and four more in the sixth but that came after the Conqs tallied five in the top of the sixth with a
Justin Dunlap grand slam highlighting the inning and the Saints didn't score enough to keep the game going as the contest finished 15-5 in six innings for a Conqs win.
The offense was cooking again for Dodge City with 15-hits led by Rhyne who was 3-4 with three RBI and two doubles, while Miller went 3-3 with four runs scored, an RBI, and a walk.
Justin Dunlap went 2-3 with five RBI, a triple, grand slam, three runs scored, and a walk. Schmidt added a two-hit game as did Blackwell.
On the mound,
Adam Walker picked up the win tossing four scoreless innings giving up just two walks while striking out seven.
Jacob Loflin and
Cade Kelsey each tossed an inning for the Conqs in the win.
