Dodge City women's basketball hit the road in conference play on Thursday and took on rival Garden City in a contest that went down to the wire with the Broncbusters using late free throws to hand the Conquistadors the 59-54 loss.
The loss drops the Conqs to 13-9 on the season and 8-8 in KJCCC action while making the series on the season a split.
Conqs jumped out to a 4-0 start and then led by six at 10-4 in the first quarter, but Garden City pushed back to snag the lead late in the first quarter and the Conqs trailed 16-12 at the end of the first. The lead for the Broncbusters ballooned to 22-12 over the first two minutes of the second quarter. To finish off the first half the Conqs closed the second quarter outscoring Garden City 14-4 to make it a two-point at intermission, 28-26 with Garden City leading. A 5-0 run by
Jenna Rose Mafua pushed the Conqs to the lead to open the second half and that lead grew to seven at 37-30, but Garden City finished the third quarter on a 9-2 run to tie the game at 39-39 entering the final 10 minutes of the contest. Both teams would hold advantages in the fourth quarter, but Garden City would take the lead late.
Krystina Hagood hit three free-throws late to make it a one-point game at 53-52 but Garden City would ultimately hit free-throws of their own to take the game at 59-54.
On the night the Conqs shot just 34% as a team finishing just 2-17 from three-point range, while Garden City shot 39.6% from the floor as a team.
Hagood paced the Conqs in the loss posting 12 points, while
Jada Burton finished with 10 points and a career-high 13 rebounds.
Destinee Paulk chipped in 10 points off the bench as she went 6-8 from the free-throw line.
Conqs are back in action quickly as they hit the road for the third straight game and will take on Butler in El Dorado on Saturday, February 6th at 2:00 pm.
