Dodge City softball team was in action on Sunday for a doubleheader in non-conference action and earned a pair of wins over Northeastern winning 15-9 and 4-0.
The wins move the Conquistadors to 5-8 on the season as they've won three-straight games and will be back in action on Wednesday, March 2nd at Garden City for a Conference doubleheader starting at 1:00 pm.
Game 1 – vs Northeastern (Won 15-9)
The Conqs bats were cooking early against Northeastern on Sunday as eight of the nine batters in the lineup went to the plate in the first inning and the Conqs scored four runs in the frame to take the early lead. Four straight singles opened the bottom of the first by the Conqs as
Kalei Villegas,
Makayla Garcia, and
AJ Poell each had an RBI single in the four-run inning. Northeastern tallied three runs in the top of the second but the Conqs responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Both teams found the scoring column again in the third with two for Northeastern and a four-run bottom of the third for the Conqs highlighted by a two-RBI single by
Melanie Castro. Northeastern made it 10-9 in the fourth after scoring four but the Conqs kept the lead and put up five runs in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI double by
Olivia Ortiz highlighting the inning and the Conqs went on to secure the 15-9 win.
Offensively the Conqs had 14 hits led by Castro who was 3-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. Villegas posted a 3-3 performance with two RBI, a walk, and three runs scored, while Garcia was 2-3 with three RBI, a double, run scored, and walk. Poell also had a two-hit game.
In the circle,
Alicyn O'Neill earned the win in relief tossing four and two-thirds giving up four runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out two.
Raemie Lopp started and tossed two and one-third innings.
Game 2 – vs Northeastern (Won 4-0)
The second game of the day was drastically different than the first as it was a low-scoring affair on both sides with the Conqs ultimately taking the game 4-0.
In the bottom of the first, the Conqs snagged the 1-0 advantage after Castro lead the inning off with a single and came around to score on an RBI single by Garcia. Conqs tacked on another in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by
Riley Haney to score Castro making it 2-0. Northeastern worked the bases loaded in the top of the fourth by
K'Lee Flores inside the circle for the Conqs the teams' defense shut the door and kept Northeastern off the board. Conqs added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth and went on to earn the doubleheader sweep with a 4-0 win.
Flores was strong in the circle tossing seven scoreless innings for the win giving up just three hits and a hit batter while striking out three.
Offensively for the Conqs, Castro finished 2-2 with three runs scored and a walk, while Garcia was 2-3 with an RBI and Haney had an RBI single.
Hadlee Richardson added a single in the contest.
