Dodge City women's basketball continues to add to their best season in years as they hosted their first postseason game since the 2004-05 season and picked up a 70-62 win over Cloud County in the first round of the Region VI Tournament.
The win marks the first postseason victory for the program since the 2013-14 season and improved the Conquistadors to 19-12 on the season. The victory also moves the Conqs into the Quarterfinals of the Region VI Tournament as they will now travel to Hutchinson to play the Blue Dragons on Tuesday, March 1st at 5:30 pm.
Conqs would take early control of the contest working out to a 10-4 advantage, but that early lead would not hold up as Cloud snagged the lead in the final two minutes of the first quarter and it was a 16-15 score in favor of the Conqs at the end of the first. In the second quarter, Conqs fell behind again after a three-minute scoreless spell to open the stanza but responded nicely finishing the first half on a 14-3 run to carry a 30-22 lead into halftime. Unlike the past few contests, the third quarter was a strong one for the Conqs as they outscored Cloud County 24-15 behind the scoring of
Krystina Hagood who dropped 15 points in the quarter. Cloud County would push back but the Conqs secured the 70-62 victory and kept their season going.
Offensively the Conqs shot 45.3% from the floor with 17 assists on 24 made field goals, while holding Cloud County to just 30.9% shooting and 20% from three-point range.
