For the first time since 2007, the Dodge City men's basketball team can call themselves Conference champions as they locked up at least a share of the KJCCC Division I title behind a 103-77 road win over Independence.
The win moves the Conqs to 23-4 on the season and 18-3 in Jayhawk Conference play with only three games remaining in the regular season. The win assures the Conqs the #1 seed in the Region VI Tournament and a first-round bye, while the win also gives the team the most wins in a single season for the program since the 2005-06 season.
The Conqs started quick and did so behind the three-ball as
Mykell Robinson and
Nick Pringle each drained a three-pointer for the Conqs to open the game up 6-0 versus the Pirates of Independence. The lead would continue to grow in the first half and get to double figures, but the Pirates made it just an eight-point game at halftime as the Conqs led 43-35. The second half belonged to the Conqs as they put up 60 points in the half and grew the lead to nearly 20 points on the way to surpassing the century mark for the eighth time this season as they claimed the 103-77 road win.
Conqs shot 48.7% from the floor and drained nine three-pointers in the contest while dominating the boards with a +17 edge in rebounding against the Pirates.
Kalen Williams led the charge for the Conqs scoring 21 points and added six rebounds and six assists, while
BJ Freeman coming off the bench tallied 16 points and six rebounds.
Oumar Koureissi finished with 15 points and five rebounds and
Kerwin Prince had a strong outing with 14 points on 6-8 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds.
Mykell Robinson chipped in 10 points and
Jordan Love finished with 12 points.
The Conqs take the floor again on Wednesday, February 16th at home when they host Colby for a 7:30 pm tip-off; with a win, the Conqs will clinch the KJCCC title out-right.
