Dodge City women's basketball team has had trouble taking down the Hutchinson Blue Dragons in the series, but the fortunes changed at home for the Conquistadors as they took down Hutchinson 69-55.
The win moves the Conqs to 11-2 on the season and 6-1 in the KJCCC while streaking their win-streaking to four-straight and ten-straight at home. The victory also marks the 30th for Head Coach,
Landon Steele as Dodge City coach and his 130th career win.
After a 2-2 tie early the Conqs went on a 7-0 run to take control early against Hutchinson leading 9-2 that lead would hold up throughout the first quarter ultimately leading to a 22-14 Conq advantage after the first 10 minutes. Hutchinson pushed back in the second quarter and tightened the contest up outscoring the Conqs by five in the second making it just a three-point game halftime at 37-34 in favor of the Conqs. In the second half, the Conqs continued to hold the Blue Dragons at bay and would extend the lead at times leading by nine points, 55-46 after three quarters. To open the fourth the Conqs mounted a 7-0 run to take an even more firm grasp of the game and would finish the contest with a 14-9 fourth quarter to secure the 69-55 win.
The Conqs shot 48.1% from the floor in the win while holding Hutchinson to 32.8% shooting and finished with just 10 turnovers in the contest.
Leah Mafua tallied 15 points on 6-12 shooting and added five rebounds, while
Jada Burton also had 15 points on 5-8 shooting and 5-5 from the free throw line while adding six assists and two rebounds.
Jenna Rose Mafua chipped in 14 points and a career-high nine rebounds, while
Shakara Anderson continued her strong performances finishing with 11 points on 4-6 shooting and snatched six rebounds.
The Conqs will look to head into Christmas break riding a wave of momentum as they will close out the first half of the season at home on Monday, December 12th at 5:30 pm against Cloud County.
