Dodge City women's basketball returned to the win column on Wednesday as they roped an 86-40 win over Northwest Kansas Tech.
The win moves the Conquistadors to 8-2 on the season and 3-1 in KJCCC action, while making it nine-straight wins at home (dating back to last season) and a five-game win streak over the Mavericks of Northwest Kansas Tech in the series. Head Coach,
Landon Steele also improved to 7-1 all-time against his former teams he coached, while also moving to 12-0 with the Conqs when scoring 80+ points (52-4 in his career when his team scores 80+ points).
Conqs raced out to an early 10-2 advantage over the first two and half minutes and didn't look back outscoring the Mavericks 27-5 in the first quarter. That lead grew in the second quarter as the Conqs opened the stanza on an 11-0 run which led to a 53-20 lead at halftime. After a tight third quarter the Conqs finished out the contest with a 21-6 fourth quarter to top the Mavericks 86-40. The 40 points by the Mavericks is the second lowest score by a Jayhawk Conference team in the
Landon Steele era.
The Conqs held Northwest Kansas Tech to just 32.1% shooting on the night and forced 29 turnovers, while outrebounding the Mavericks 50-29. Conqs drained 10 three-pointers in the win marking the fifth time this season with 10+ made threes in a game, while also posting an 18-24 night from the free throw line. Northwest Kansas Tech was just 5-10 from the line and 1-9 from three-point range.
A career-high 24 points by
Bree Stephens paced the Conqs as she was 10-14 from the floor including 3-5 from three-point range and added six rebounds and three steals.
Jada Burton tallied 16 points on 6-8 shooting and had five rebounds and three assists.
Jenna Rose Mafua chipped in 10 points on 4-9 shooting. Seven other Conqs scored on the night including nine points and eight rebounds by
Georgia Gray, while
Leah Mafua added eight rebounds.
Conqs now turn their attention to a rivalry showdown against Garden City on the road on Saturday, December 3
rd at 2:00 pm.
