Dodge City women's basketball opened the 2022-23 season with a convincing win over Coastal Bend in the South Plains Classic using a strong second and third quarters to gain a 99-67 win.
The Conquistadors who trailed after the first quarter propelled themselves to the lead after a strong second stanza and solidify the game in their favor in a dominant third quarter to move to 1-0 on the season with the 99-67 win over Coastal Bend.
After a slow start to the contest, the Conqs slipped behind in the first quarter leading to a 17-14 lead after the first quarter against Coastal Bend. In the second quarter, a little over three minutes into the frame the Conqs put together a run and would ultimately outscore Coastal Bend 31-15 to lead 45-32 at halftime. In the second half, it was all Conqs in the third quarter as they dominated the quarter outscoring Coastal Bend 34-14 to firmly grab control of the contest and go on to earn the 99-67 win.
Conqs would shoot 54.8% from the floor on the night while holding Coastal Bend to just 33.3% shooting and won the rebounding battle 54-31. As a team, the Conqs also had 20 assists on 40 made field goals.
Six double-figure scorers led the Conqs on the night including a game-high 17 points on 7-8 shooting and 3-4 from three-point range for Kianna Lemons. Leah Mafua added 13 points and eight rebounds, while Shakara Anderson opened her campaign with the Conqs with 13 points. Bree Stephens tallied 12 points along with eight rebounds, while Georgia Gray posted 11 points and Jada Burton chipped in 10 points and four assists.
Up next the Conqs take on #8 South Plains in the South Plains Classic at 2:00 pm on Saturday, November 5th, and then will have their home opener on Tuesday, November 8th against Northern-Oklahoma-Enid at 5:00 pm.
