Volleyball Wins First Playoff Match Since 2012 to Advance to Semifinals

For the first time since 2012, the Dodge City volleyball team is heading to the semifinals of the Region VI Plains District playoffs after taking down rival Garden City in four sets in the first round at home.

The Conquistadors took down Garden City for the tenth time in the last 15 meetings winning 25-15, 25-15, 23-25, and 25-9 to move to 22-8 on the season and claim a spot in the semifinals of the Region VI Plains District playoffs.

Back-and-forth early on to open the night the first set was tied up at 11-11 when the Conqs would mount a run leading to a 16-13 advantage and then a 19-13 lead with the Broncbusters calling timeout at both points of the set. The run continued in the first set for the Conqs as they outscored Garden City 14-4 from when the first set was tied 11-11 and won the set 25-15. Set two saw Garden City own a slight lead early until again midway through the set the Conqs snagged the lead and would outscore the Broncbusters 16-5 down the stretch from when the set was tied at 9-9 and win the second set 25-15. The third set saw Garden City own the lead most of it going up by five multiple times, but the Conqs fought back to tie the set late at 23-23, only to see the Broncbusters call timeout and score the next two points to win the third set 25-23. In the fourth set, the Conqs established early control going up 5-1 then 10-4, and again 18-7 on their way to winning the set 25-9 to claim the match. The nine points are the lowest by an opponent in a set this season against the Conqs.

For the third straight match, Ozge Tan recorded a double-double as she posted 15 kills and 16 digs, adding four aces and five block assists. Oliwia Durka added 10 kills on the night, while Martyna Kmuk had 11 kills and nine digs. Nur Yaren Turkmenoglu tallied 41 assists, 10 digs, three aces, four kills, and a block assist. Both Jatnna Pena and Alannah Lozoya tallied double-figure digs with 19 and 14, respectively.

The win is the first in the playoffs for the Conqs since 2012 when they beat the team they will play in the semifinals, Seward County, as the Conqs beat them in the first round 2012. Conqs will take on Seward County on Friday, November 4th at 5:30 pm in Liberal, while the other semifinal will feature Butler versus Hutchinson as the top four seeds all advanced to the semifinals.
