Volleyball Ends Best Season in Years in Region Semifinals

Dodge City volleyball team competed in the Region VI Plains District Semifinals on Friday night after claiming their first playoff win in 10 years early in the week and took on #14 Seward County. 

The Conquistadors battled with the Saints of Seward County but ultimately were unable to over falling behind and fell 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-23) to end their season. The loss caps a stellar year for the Conqs at 22-9 with multiple accomplishments along the way during the season. 

The Conqs fell behind to open the first set but looked to stay close only to see Seward County stretch their lead out to 18-9 when the Conqs called timeout. Despite a strong push to stay in the first set the Conqs ultimately fell 25-16 in the first set. Set two saw the Conqs jump up 6-2 but Seward County answered and even the set up at 8-8 and then took the lead which they kept on their way to the 25-17 set win. In the third set it would be tight throughout with both teams holding the lead and late in the set looking to stay alive, the Conqs tied the set at 22-22 leading to a Saints timeout. Out of the timeout, the Saints regained control and snagged the third set 25-23 to finish the match. 

Oliwia Durka helped lead the way for the Conqs in the loss recording 11 kills with three digs, a solo block, and two block assists. Ozge Tan tallied another double-double with 10 kills and 15 digs; Nur Yaren Turkmenoglu finished the night with 28 assists, five aces, and three digs. Jatnna Pena tallied 12 digs on the evening. 

The season ends for the Conqs with plenty accomplished finishing 22-9 overall marking the most wins in a season since 2010, while also going 10-6 in conference play to give the Conqs their most KJCCC wins in a season since 2010. The Conqs also hosted a playoff match for the second straight year after finishing fourth in the KJCCC and winning their first playoff match since 2012.
