Dodge City women's basketball looking to take down Seward County for the first time in years could not hold on to their lead falling late 76-75 as the Saints split a pair of free throws with .3 seconds remaining being the difference.
The loss by the Conquistadors moves the ladies to 7-2 on the season and 2-1 in KJCCC play.
After an early 5-3 advantage for Seward the Conqs swung the led their way including a late 7-0 run in the first quarter and led 26-16 after the first 10 minutes. That lead remained at 10 after a stalemate of a second quarter as the Conqs went into intermission up 40-30. In the second half the Conqs looked to take a firm grasp of the game working the lead to 21 points at 59-38 using an 11-0 run in the quarter to push to that lead. At the end of three quarters the Conqs held the 61-48 advantage, but Seward County put together a 28-14 fourth quarter to push back and tied the game up at 75-75 with just under 10 seconds remaining the Conqs were looking for the final shot but turned the ball over. Seward would get a final shot try and drew a foul with .3 seconds left; after missing the first free throw Seward hit the second and grabbed the 76-75 win.
In the loss the Conqs shot 44.6% from the floor and 20-22 from the charity stripe but only 5-19 from three-point range. Seward County shot just 39.7% but hit 10 three's and was 16-19 from the free throw line. Conqs were hurt by 28 turnovers in the loss.
Shakara Anderson paced the Conqs with 13 points and went 6-6 from the free throw line.
Georgia Gray,
Bree Stephens, and
Leah Mafua all tallied 12 points each on the day. Gray was 6-7 from the floor adding three rebounds, while Stephens added eight rebounds and was 5-5 from the free throw line, and Mafua had three rebounds and two assists.
Jada Burton tallied 10 points and eight rebounds, while
Jenna Rose Mafua added 10 points.
The Conqs are back in action again on Wednesday, November 30
th hosting Northwest Kansas Tech at 5:30 pm in Dodge City.
