Women's Basketball Stymies Coffeyville To Gain KJCCC Win

Dodge City women's basketball is off to their best start since the 2015-16 season after picking up a 86-74 win over Coffeyville at home marking the first win over the Red Ravens for the ladies since 2018. 
 
The Conquistadors with the win have won six in a row improving to 7-1 on the season and 2-0 in KJCCC action. 
 
The contest was back and forth throughout the first quarter with neither team leading by more than three-points until late in the stanza when the Conqs finished the quarter on a 6-0 run to lead 22-17. Conqs opened the second quarter on an 8-2 run to lead 30-19 with 5:42 left in the first half. The lead grew to 11 points in the second quarter, but Coffeyville pushed back to draw within four points late in the first half and the Conqs led 37-30 at halftime after Jenna Rose Mafua hit three free throws to finish the first half. Third quarter was tight as the rest of the contest with both teams owning the lead and the Conqs was just four entering the fourth quarter. The lead ballooned back to double figures in the fourth quarter, but the Conqs would have to fend off another Coffeyville run ultimately outscoring the Red Ravens 27-19 in the fourth to secure the 86-74 win. 
 
In a battle of two of the Top five three-point shooting teams in the nation the Conqs out dueled Coffeyville from behind the arc draining 10 threes' while holding the Red Ravens to 3-14 from behind the arc. The Conqs also went 18-22 from the free throw line and forced 21 Coffeyville turnovers. 
 
Leah Mafua had her best game as a Conq dropping 25 points on 9-18 shooting including 4-8 from three-point range adding three rebounds and three steals. Jenna Rose Mafua added 16 points, while Jada Burton posted 13 points, five assists, six rebounds, and three steals. Bree Stephens chipped in 13 points along with four rebounds, three assists, and two steals. 
 
The Conqs head to Liberal on Saturday, November 26th to take on Seward County at 2:00 pm to continue the season.
