Dodge City women's basketball opened Jayhawk Conference play on Saturday on the road and won in routing fashion over the Cowley Tigers claiming an 85-54 victory.
The win marks the second-largest margin of victory in a conference game under Head Coach,
Landon Steele as the Conquistadors improved to 6-1 on the season the 1-0 in KJCCC action. The victory also makes it three straight wins over the Tigers in the series.
After surrendering the first bucket of the game the Conqs mounted a quick 6-0 run via transition opportunities to go up 6-2 however Cowley countered and grabbed the lead and held a 15-12 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The three-pointers started to fall in the second stanza for the Conqs as the lead not only swung back to the Conqs but ballooned higher and higher. Conqs opened the second quarter on an 11-2 run and outscored Cowley 24-6 to lead 36-21 at halftime. The Conqs held Cowley to just 28.1% shooting in the first half including 0-11 from three-point range. The lead continued to grow in the second half for the Conqs as they cruised to the 85-54 road win over Cowley.
The Conqs finished the contest shooting 48.4% from the floor and matched a season high for a game with 12 three-pointers, while defensively they held Cowley to the lowest field goal percentage by an opponent this season as the Tigers shot just 23%. Conqs won the rebounding battle (40-33) and dished out 22 assists on 31 made field goals.
Bree Stephens paced the Conqs with 21 points while adding six rebounds and four assists.
Jenna Rose Mafua and
Leah Mafua also notched double figures in the win. Rosie tallied 18 points on 6-13 shooting, while Leah added 13 points along with seven rebounds and three assists.
The Conqs are back at home on Tuesday, November 22nd as they host Coffeyville for KJCCC action at 5:30 pm.
