Dodge City women's basketball headed to Texas for the second time this season this time to participate in the Midland College Classic in Midland, Texas. In the first game of the Classic, the Conquistadors took on Ranger College and earned an 83-74 win.
The Conqs had to overcome early adversity and used a 25-15 fourth quarter to earn the win and improve to 3-1 on the season.
Conqs saw Ranger race out to an 8-0 lead to open the contest over the first three minutes, but the Conqs would respond by pushing back to tie the contest late in the first quarter and even it up at 18-18 after the first quarter. Early in the second quarter, the Conqs grabbed the lead briefly and it would be back and forth in the quarter until Ranger closed the half strong to give them the 35-32 advantage at halftime. In the second half, it was tight throughout the third quarter and Ranger led 59-58 entering the final 10 minutes of the game. The fourth quarter would see the Conqs spray in multiple three-pointers and grow their lead to double figures at 72-61 with 4:54 remaining. Ranger countered to draw within five points with just over two minutes left but the Conqs finished strong and behind a 25-15 fourth quarter earning the 83-74 win.
In the victory, the Conqs shot 44.6% from the floor and drained 12 three-pointers, while going 13-16 from the free-throw line. Defensively the Conqs held Ranger to 38.5% shooting and forced them into 19 turnovers.
Leah Mafua recorded a game-high 19 points on 7-12 shooting while adding four rebounds and three steals.
Bree Stephens registered a double-double finishing with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while
Jenna Rose Mafua tallied 13 points and
Kianna Lemons chipped in 12 points.
The Conqs are back in action against the host of the Classic, Midland on Saturday, November 12th at 4:00 pm.
