For the second time, this season and in just three games the Dodge City men's basketball team would need overtime to decide the winner, and this time the Conquistadors were victorious claiming an 82-79 win in overtime over Trinidad State on the road.
The Conqs opened the Trinidad State Classic in Colorado taking on the host and with the win over Trinidad State, the Conqs moved to 2-1 on the season.
In the first half, the Conqs took the early advantage, but the contest remained tight with the lead never growing larger than six when the Conqs led 24-18 and ultimately again at 31-25 heading into halftime. In the second half Trinidad State made several runs to cut the lead to two and one points but it wasn't until the end of regulation with their push ultimately tied the game. The Conqs got a pair of free throws from Jason Edwards with 5.5 seconds left to make it a three-point game and then Trinidad State got a three-point try off in the final seconds and drew a foul. After making all three free throws to tie the game the contest went to overtime and early in the overtime period the Conqs saw Trinidad State take a lead, but the Conqs solidified the win late as Chris Robinson had a late layup and DJ Jones hit a late free throw and a Trinidad State three-pointer clanked off the rim as time expired to give the Conqs an 82-79 overtime road win.
Conqs despite shooting just 39.7% and Trinidad State shooting 45.6% would take advantage of 22 Trinidad State turnovers in the contest.
Edwards and Robinson led the Conqs each posting 19 points in the win, as Edwards added four rebounds, three assists, and two steals, while Robinson had three assists and was 7-9 from the floor. Avnoor Bhullar chipped in 15 points as he was 5-8 from three-point range, while Cam Malray added 14 points and four rebounds.
