Dodge City volleyball team wraps up the regular season with a four-set win over Barton on the road earning the sweep over the Cougars for the first time since 2010.
After dropping the first set to the Cougars the Conquistadors responded to take the next three and claim the 3-1 win (21-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-20). The win moves the Conqs to 21-8 on the season as they finish 10-6 in KJCCC action and finish fourth in the Conference. The 10 conference wins mark the most since 2010 in a season for the Conqs.
Set one saw Barton jump up early as the Conqs got off to a slow start falling behind 7-4 and despite the Conqs strong efforts Barton would hold their advances off and secure the first set 25-21. In the second set, the Conqs jumped up early quickly doubling up Barton 10-5, and didn't look back stretching the lead out before taking the second set 25-19 to even the match. The third set was tight and back-and-forth early until the Conqs put together a 4-0 run at the 10-10 mark and used that up to go on to win the third set 25-16. In the fourth set after early trading of points, the Conqs once again established control and went on to grab the fourth set 25-20 to claim the match.
As a team, the Conqs recorded a season-high 61 kills in the match with a season-best 58 assists.
A trio of double-figure kill performances helped lead the way for the Conqs as Ozge Tan tallied her 13th double-double of the season with 16 kills and 15 digs while adding three block assists and two aces. Oliwia Durka matched her career-high in kills with 18 and tallied five digs and two block assists, while Miya Alvarado also matched her career-high in kills with 10 and added two aces and four block assists.
Nur Yaren Turkmenoglu who surpassed 1,000 assists for the season recently had her highest assist total of the year with 52, while adding four kills, an ace, a solo block, two block assists, and 13 digs which gave her a double-double on the night. Jatnna Pena and Alannah Lozoya were both strong defensively for the Conqs recording 21 and 20 digs, respectively, while Day'sha Pettway also was a strong defensive presence registering a career-high 13 digs.
The Conqs for the second-straight year will host the first round of the NJCAA Division I Region VI Plains District playoffs after finishing fourth in the KJCCC for the second-straight year. The Conqs are set to take on rival Garden City at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, November 2nd in Dodge City.
