Dodge City women's soccer team picked up their first KJCCC win of the season holding off Neosho County for the 2-1 victory at home with a huge penalty kick save late to help preserve the win.
The Conquistadors with the win improve to 2-6-1 on the season and 1-4 in KJCCC play while also making it four-straight wins over Neosho County in the series.
It was a battle throughout the contest from wire-to-wire and remained scoreless until the 18th minute of the first half when the Conqs got on the board as
Alexandra Sibrikova pushed a free kick into the box where
Maria Scopino pulled it in and tallied her first goal of the season giving the Conqs the 1-0 lead. The advantage grew to 2-0 for the Conqs when Scopino pushed a cross into the box and
Femke Wiedeman connected on her first goal of the season on a header.
Leading 2-0 the Conqs saw Neosho County take control of possession in the second half and on a corner kick in the 56th minute the Panthers would get on the board making it 2-1. In the final 10 minutes, the Conqs continued to see Neosho County make several advances and at the 6:40 mark, a handball in the box by the Conqs led to a red card and a penalty kick attempt for the Panthers. Neosho County looking to tie the match took the penalty kick, but
Joelle Brand would make a spectacular save to keep the game at 2-1. The Conqs a man down were able to fend off Neosho for the final six-plus minutes and secure the 2-1 win.
Both teams recorded 11 shots in the contest with the Conqs outshooting the Panthers 7-3 in the first half and Neosho County outshooting the Conqs 8-4 in the second half. Scopino finished a goal and assist, while Wiedeman tallied the other goal for the Conqs and Brand recorded four saves.
