Football Struggles On Road Against Garden City

Dodge City football hit the road for just the second time this season and took on rival Garden City and it was turnovers and struggles on offense that hinder the Conquistadors on the night as they fell 40-7 to the Broncbusters.

The loss moves the Conqs to 2-3 on the season and 1-2 in KJCCC action while making it eight straight losses in the series against Garden City with the last win coming in 2015 over the Broncbusters.

After both teams struggled to move the ball early in the contest Garden City broke through after getting solid field position at their 45-yard line and would cover 55 yards in six plays to score the first touchdown of the game making 7-0 with 5:13 left in the first quarter. Early in the second quarter, the Conqs were rewarded with great field position at the Broncbuster 24-yard, but a fumble was scooped up by Garden City and the Broncbusters then turned it into points on a seven-play drive covering 70 yards to make it 14-0. Conqs once again had a shot to cut into the Garden City lead just before halftime as they started to orchestrate a drive and worked into the redzone but the final play of the first half would be an incomplete pass and Conqs headed into halftime down 14-0.

Looking for a spark to open the second half the Conqs, unfortunately, saw the spark happen for the opposition as Garden City took the kickoff to open the third quarter to the house 89-yards to make it 21-0. The lead grew to 28-0 before the Conqs finally broke through getting on the board with a five-yard touchdown pass from DeRhon King to Kam'Ryn Thomas on a nine-play 75-yard drive. Broncbusters would visit the endzone two more times before the end of the contest sending the Conqs to a 40-7 defeat.

In the loss, the Conqs were outgained 337 to 200 total yards while it was three turnovers and eight sacks were given up that hurt the Conqs in the contest. Defensively, Tyrell McMillan led the Conqs with eight tackles, while Jonethan Wiltshire added eight himself. On offense, King was 9-18 for 120 yards and a touchdown and interception, while Javon Campbell caught a pair of passes for 77 yards.

Up next the Conqs take on #2 Hutchinson Blue Dragons on Saturday, October 8th at 1:00 pm in Dodge City.
