It was a Top 25 showdown in the Jayhawk Conference on the road for the #5 Dodge City Conquistador men's basketball team as they took on #21 Colby Trojans on Saturday and the Conqs saw the Trojans end their 11-game win streak as Dodge City fell 107-85 on the road.
The shorthanded Conqs held an early lead but trailed at the half and fell behind further in the second half and with the loss moves to 13-2 overall and 8-1 in KJCCC.
Conqs established the early lead on the road with Colby struggling to score early but the Trojans found their stroke as they would shoot a blistering 61.7% from the floor for the game. The first half was tight and at intermission, Colby held a 49-43 advantage; Conqs kept it close with eight first-half three-pointers. In the second half, the Conqs made advances, but the buckets continued to fall for the Trojans at a high frequency and Colby ballooned their lead on the way to the 107-85 win over the Conqs.
In the loss, the Conqs shot just 37.2% from the floor comparative to Colby who shot 61.7% as a team. The free-throw line also played a difference as the Conqs were a solid 18-24 but Colby had 33 trips to the line and went 28-33.
BJ Freeman continued his monster freshman season for the Conqs as he recorded a career-high 36 points on 12-22 shooting, made five three-pointers, and went 7-8 from the free-throw line. Freeman had 23 points at halftime and added six rebounds in the game.
Jordan Love got his first start of the season and matched his career-high with 14 points, going 4-4 from the free-throw line, grabbed seven rebounds, and had three steals. While,
Themus Fulks finished with 12 points, eight assists, three rebounds, and a steal.
It's a quick turnaround for the Conqs as they are back in action on Monday, January 10th at home in a makeup game against Seward County at 7:00 pm.
