Women's Basketball Falls in Tight Contest With Coffeyville

For the third straight game, the Dodge City women's basketball team went down to the wire in a tight contest this time hosting Coffeyville, and just like the first go-around earlier in the season, it was the Red Ravens squeezing out the tight win.

The Conquistadors fell 67-62 to Coffeyville which moves the Conqs to 11-7 on the season and 6-6 in Jayhawk Conference play.

Coffeyville jump up early, but the Conqs would push back getting within one multiple times but by the end of the first quarter Coffeyville held a 19-16 advantage. Coffeyville tried to extend their lead, but the Conqs would stay close, and ultimately with just about four minutes left in the first half after a Krystina Hagood bucket, the Conqs tied the game at 30-30. Conqs saw Coffeyville counter and finish the first half on a 6-2 run for a 36-32 lead at halftime.

Conqs battled back again in the third quarter and tied the game up again with 1:58 remaining in the third as the game was knotted up at 48-48. Bree Stephens nailed a pair of trifectas for the Conqs and the lead swung in their favor at 51-48 and would be that heading into the final 10 minutes. The fourth saw Coffeyville regain the lead again, but the Conqs would be within two points with a minute remaining and the Red Ravens would secure the win late 67-62.

Both teams shot just over 30% in the game while the Conqs saw Coffeyville go 25-31 from the free-throw line and win the rebounding battle +11, while they were led by Faith Simpson who scored 35 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.

In the loss, Stephens paced the Conqs as she recorded another double-double recording 20 points and grabbing 14 rebounds (matches a career-high), as she went 4-8 from three-point range. Jada Burton tallied 13 points while adding six rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Hagood chipped in nine points, six rebounds, and three steals.

Conqs will now hit the road for their next contest as they travel to Liberal to take on Seward County on Wednesday, January 26th at 5:30 pm.
