Men's Basketball Wins Thriller in Overtime Versus Coffeyville

For the first in school history, the Dodge City men's basketball program has swept Coffeyville in a season but the second time around on Saturday didn't come as easy as the first win earlier in the season. The Conquistadors used overtime to battle back and beat the defending National champion Red Ravens 105-104 with a game-winning shot by BJ Freeman with 3.8 seconds left in overtime.

The win moves the Conqs to 17-3 on the season and 12-2 in Jayhawk Conference play and keeps the Conqs undefeated at home at 10-0 this season. Conqs also continue to hold the top spot in the KJCCC standings.

After falling behind early as Coffeyville opened the game with a quick spurt to take control the Conqs would push back in a low-scoring first half. Keandre Bowles drained four free throws in a row for the Conqs after being fouled and a technical foul of Coffeyville and tied the game up in the process at 21-21 with 7:20 left in the first half. BJ Freeman would then drain a three-point a bit later and the Conqs grabbed the lead at 24-23 with 5:32 left in the first and the Conqs led in the final seconds of the first half, but Coffeyville hit a tough shot at the buzzer to end the first half and send the game into intermission tied up at 36-36.

Conqs came out firing in the second half as Freeman drained a three-pointer to open the second half. It remained tight the entire second half with both teams owning leads and Coffeyville led 87-83 with 30 seconds remaining. The Conqs got a free throw by Themus Fulks and then a steal and bucket by Fulks to make it 87-86. Coffeyville would connect on a pair of free throws to push the lead to three and with 1.9 seconds left in regulation, Kalen Williams dropped in a three-pointer to tie the game at 89-89 and push it to overtime.

In overtime, Coffeyville would lead for most of the period including pushing the lead to five points with just over one minute remaining. Conqs took a quick two on a Nick Pringle dunk with 11 seconds left making it 104-103 and then the Conqs forced a jump ball on the inbound and the turnover by Coffeyville to get the ball with just over five seconds left. Freeman got the inbound pass and went to the rim converting on the layup and Coffeyville's last-second heave would come up short and the Conqs won 105-104 in overtime.

Conqs despite starting the game 1-5 finished shooting 56.9% as a team and improved to 13-0 under Head Coach, Jake Williams when shooting over 50% in a game. The three-point basket played a huge factor for the Conqs as they drained a season-high 12 shooting 48% from behind the arc.

A quartet of double-figure scorers led the Conqs on the day versus Coffeyville. Williams finished with 23 points on 9-18 shooting including 4-8 from three-point range and added six assists. Freeman added 23 points and five rebounds, going 4-6 from the three-point range. Fulks chipped in 22 points with five assists, while Kerwin Prince added 13 points and went 6-6 from the floor.

The season continues next Wednesday, January 26th for the Conqs as they hit the road and travel to Liberal for a showdown against Seward County at 7:30 pm.
