After a tough close loss on Saturday the Dodge City women's basketball team went to battle on the road on Wednesday evening and picked up a huge 86-85 overtime win over Cowley.
The win improved the Conquistadors to 11-6 on the season and 6-5 in Jayhawk Conference action. The win is the first in Arkansas City for the Conqs since 2010.
Falling behind early as Cowley drained a pair of early three-pointers the Conqs would trail by as many as eight points in the first quarter but respond with a 7-0 to close the quarter to draw within one point at 17-16. The run continued in the second quarter as the Conqs ultimately made it a 12-0 run to make it 21-17 taking their first lead of the game early in the second stanza. It would remain tight and the Conqs defense would stymie Cowley holding them to without a field goal for a nine-plus minute stretch in the first half and going into halftime the Conqs led 30-29.
Krystina Hagood and
Bree Stephens connected on back-to-back three-pointers early in the second half and with 7:33 left in the third, the Conqs held an eight-point lead their largest of the game. The lead did not hold up as Cowley battled to tie the game and eventually take the lead back at 58-56 heading into the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter was a see-saw affair and tight to the wire as it was tied late when Cowley would turn the ball over giving the Conqs an opportunity for the final shot, but the Conqs were unable to connect, and the game went to overtime tied at 71-71.
Conqs would grow the lead out to seven points in overtime but only lead 85-83 in the final seconds when Cowley drove to the hoop to tie it up at 85-85. The Conqs raced back down the floor and
Samantha Koeberer drew a foul and made one of two free-throws and the Conqs would take the 86-85 win.
The ladies finished the night shooting 45.6% from the floor finishing with 16 assists on 31 field goals.
A career-high 22 points by Stephens paces the Conqs on the night as she was 7-16 including 3-4 from three-point range and 5-6 from the charity stripe while adding five rebounds and two blocks.
Jada Burton matched her best game as a Conq scoring 19 points on 7-11 shooting and added seven rebounds and four assists. Hagood chipped in double figures with 14 points, while grabbing five rebounds, and dishing out four assists.
Teona Pop Stojanova off the bench tallied nine points.
Conqs are back home on Saturday, January 22nd at 1:00 pm as they are set to host Coffeyville.
