Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Mike Smith

Men's Basketball Falls In Road Tilt With Cowley

Wednesday marked the start of the second time through the KJCCC schedule and the Dodge City men's basketball hit the road to start it facing off against the Cowley Tigers.

The contest saw plenty of ebbs and flows for both teams but ultimately the Conquistadors comeback attempt was stifled by the Tigers as Cowley snagged the 79-76 win. The loss moves the Conqs to 16-3 on the season and 11-2 in KJCCC action.

Conqs flew out of the gates working to a quick 6-0 lead, but that lead disappeared as Cowley started to drain three-pointers taking their first lead at 11-10 with 15:25 left in the first half. The three-pointers continued to fall in the first half for Cowley as they would hit nine in the half and despite the Conqs putting together a few runs in the first half, it was a 43-32 advantage at halftime for Cowley.

The Conqs would settle in to start the second half and go on a 25-2 run that spanned 11 minutes of game time working their way to the lead going up by as many as eight points at 58-50 with 7:53 remaining in the contest. Cowley answered with a run of their own regaining the lead and pushing it to 76-69 with 1:14 remaining. The Conqs continued to claw to the end as Themus Fulks hit a three-pointer to make it a four-point game and then a turnover gave the Conqs the ball again and Fulks got a quick layup to make it 78-76. Cowley hit 1-2 free-throws with just two seconds remaining and the Conqs last-second chance came up short as the game finished with Cowley winning 79-76.

In the loss, the Conqs shot 46.4% from the floor but Cowley shot 47.3% and hit 13 three-pointers.

Fulks finished with a team-high 22 points on 8-12 shooting adding three assists, while BJ Freeman chipped in 17 points. Nick Pringle tallied 10 points and went 6-8 from the free-throw line, also adding five rebounds and Kerwin Prince off the bench finished with 10 points and six rebounds.

The Conqs will look to get back into the win column on Saturday, January 22nd when they host Coffyeville at 3:00 pm.
