After getting back to action for the first time in a month on Thursday the Dodge City women's basketball team took the floor on Goff-Burke Family court at home for the first time since December 8th as they hosted Barton.
It was a tight contest wire-to-wire between the Conquistadors and Cougars and the Cougars secured the 51-47 win late. The loss moves the Conqs to 10-6 on the season and 5-5 in KJCCC action.
The lead changed hands a few times in the first quarter and the Conqs trailed 11-9 after one frame. It remained tight in the second quarter and while the Conqs would outscore Barton in the second it was the Cougars who led at halftime up 23-22. Both teams struggled shooting from the floor and that trend continued into the second half, but it remained a tight contest, also and was tied 36-36 after three quarters. Just into the fourth quarter, the lead would be the largest of the game for the Conqs as they went up by five points, but Barton answered and ultimately worked to their largest lead of six points with just over four minutes remaining.
Krystina Hagood knocked down three free throws in the final minute to close the gap to two points and the Conqs would have an opportunity late but would be unable to tie or take the lead and fell 51-47.
While the Conqs held Barton to just 30.2% shooting they shot just 24.3% from the floor themselves.
Hagood finished with a game-high 17 points and added four rebounds, while
Bree Stephens recorded a double-double with 14 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. Stephens finished out her stat line with three assists, three blocks, and two steals.
Teona Pop Stojanova chipped in six points.
The Conqs hit the road next week to continue the season as they are set to travel to Arkansas City to face Cowley on Wednesday, January 19th.
