Conqs Take a Break from KJCCC Play, Sweep Lamar
The Dodge City Community College volleyball squad got a break last night from the gauntlet that is the Jayhawk Conference and swept the Lamar Lopes in straight sets, 3-0.
Finding themselves down early in each set, the Conquistadors managed to come alive to close out all three sets in convincing fashion winning 25-14, 25-17, and 25-12.
Down 8-6 in the first set, it was a 13-2 run capped off by a Ruby Osawey ace to make the score 19-10 and prompt a Lamar timeout. The Conquistadors certainly weren't going to let their lead dwindle as they quickly finished out the set 25-14 off a Maria Alcantrara kill.
In the second set, it was a 4-1 deficit this time until Hillary English got loose for three consecutive kills to take a 5-4 lead. The Lopes managed to make sure the second frame remained close, battling to keep the score at 14-12 late in the set. A two-point deficit is the closest Lamar would get as 14-12 became 18-13 and the Conquistadors cruised to a 25-17 win.
The final frame was the Ruby Osawey and Loren Rodriguez show as the pair combined for seven of the teams 10 kills in the set. Tied at 6-6, the Conquistadors used a 13-3 run to push the score to 19-9. They scored the match's final point off a Lope miss-hit for a 25-12 set victory and a sweep on the evening.
"We had a great 3-set, team win tonight! We did a good job of spreading our offense, as well as getting it done defensively," said head coach Jordan Bruere. "I thought we served tough, ending the night with 10 aces. We are starting to click as a team and will use this momentum heading into Garden City."
The offensive attack was evenly distributed for the Conquistadors as Hillary English led the Conqs in kills with eight, but was closely followed by Ruby Oswaey's seven and Loren Rodriguez's six. With sophomore libero Bruna Torres out for a second consecutive match, freshman Sydnee Connors stepped in to tie English for a game high of 13 digs while also adding four assists.
The Conquistadors move to 4-10 on the year while remaining 3-6 in KJCCC play. Lamar falls to 0-16 on the season.
Dodge City is back in action tonight, March 5th when a rivalry is renewed as they host the Garden City Broncbusters in a makeup game from last month when the Broncbusters were on pause. The match is set to begin at 6:30 pm CST with doors to the Student Activity Center opening to fans at 6:00 pm. Tickets for the match can be purchased here.
