Conqs Take Down Broncbusters in US-50 Rivalry

The Dodge City Conquistador volleyball program renewed a rivalry with the Garden City Broncbusters Friday night, winning in four sets, 3-1.

The two teams traded sets to open the match, both winning 25-22 for a 1-1 tie heading into the third set.

Tied at 12-12 in the third set, the Conquistadors offense came alive as they outscored the Broncbusters 13-7 to take advantage heading into the fourth. Freshman Hillary English capped off the set victory with one of her match-high 19 kills.

Having struggled in the fourth set this season, this Conquistador team wrote a different story in this contest. After a 7-0 Conquistador lead turned into a 7-7 tie, the Conqs proceeded to rattle off a 12-2 run to take a commanding 19-9 lead. The home team used that momentum to cruise to a 25-15 set victory, giving them the match in the process.

"I'm so proud of this team," said head coach Jordan Bruere. "We made a few tweaks right before the game but we still kept our composure and competed. A huge goal of ours was to be better blockers and the girls responded with seven blocks while doing an awesome job funneling the ball to our defense. Offensively, Hillary English was huge for us tonight with her double-double. We will enjoy this moment tonight, but tomorrow our focus turns to Seward."

The Conquistadors were led by a monster performance by freshman Hillary English as she recorded 19 kills, 20 digs, and four blocks. Back from a two-game absence, libero Bruna Torres led the team in digs with 27. Nur Yaren Turkmenoglu led the Conqs in assists with her 38.

The win marks the first back-to-back wins on the season for the Conquistadors as they move to 5-10 and 4-6 in KJCCC play. Garden City falls to 8-8 and 4-2 in KJCCC play.

Dodge City is back in action on Monday, March 8th when they host the 6th ranked Seward County Saints. The match is set to begin at 6:30 pm CST in the Student Activity Center. Tickets can be purchased here.
