Conqs Leave El Dorado Empty Handed in Conference Loss

The Dodge City Community College volleyball program traveled to El Dorado, Kansas last night to take on the Butler Grizzlies in a second KJCCC matchup, leaving with a 3-0 loss.

The Conquistadors got out to a quick start, taking a 6-1 lead on the Grizzlies in the opening set, prompting a Butler timeout. The Grizzlies battled back, but Dodge City found themselves with a 23-20 lead late in the set. Following their second and final timeout, it was a 5-0 Butler run that gave the home team a 25-23 first set win.

Dodge City was able to challenge Butler's defense with several long rally points, but couldn't turn their attacks into kills as the Grizzlies went on to take set two 25-16 and set three 25-20.

"We challenged Butler's defense, which was a goal of ours," said head coach Jordan Bruere. "Offensively we were putting up some good swings that just wouldn't fall. We pushed back with some great long rallys and defensive plays, but our defense needed to be a little crisper to push us into a fourth set. A break from conference play will be good for us this Saturday as we compete against two really good teams in Colorado. We are excited for this opportunity and will continue to improve during this second half of conference play."

Without her counterpart Ruby Osawey, who went down with an ankle injury on March 8th against Seward, Hillary English was forced to pick up more of the offensive attack. English led the team with 13 kills and also added 13 digs. Bruna Torres led the team in digs with 29, three shy of her career mark of 32 which she hit the last time these two teams met.

Dodge City falls to 5-12 on the year and 4-8 in KJCCC play, sitting in 7th in the West. Butler remains in 4th in the West as they improve to 7-5 in conference play and 12-7 on the season.

The Conquistadors are back in action on Saturday, March 13 when they travel to La Junta, CO for a tri-meet with Otero Community College and North Platte Community College. Dodge City takes on North Platte at 12:00 pm CST and Otero at 2:00 pm CST. Stay tuned on if a live stream link will be provided.
