Conquistador Volleyball Takes Two Matches in Colorado

The Dodge City Community College volleyball program took a break from KJCCC action with a tri-match hosted by Otero Community College.

The Conquistadors took down North Platte Community College 3-0 and then proceeded to beat Otero Junior College 3-1.

The second match of the day against Otero Community College was especially sweet for head coach Jordan Bruere. Bruere came to Dodge City as the head coach after being an assistant at Otero and helping turn them into a national power.

"We played with a lot of grit today," said head coach Jordan Bruere. "This team was ready to do whatever they needed to come out on top and get these wins. I was very proud of our serve-receive throughout both matches. It was consistent, making it easy for us to run our offense and find ways to score. Defensively, we did a great job as well. We read the ball well and made the right moves to keep the ball alive. These two wings were big for us. We are going to use this momentum to push us into another conference match on Monday.

Game One vs. North Platte Community College | 3-0 W

The Conquistadors came to Colorado ready to compete as they opened the day with a straight set victory over North Platte Community College, a team that beat them 3-1 on February 5^th in McCook, Nebraska.

The Conqs won by scores of 25-21, 25-19, and 25-21. Still without the injured Ruby Osawey, Loren Rodriguez stepped up to lead the team in kills with 12. It's the first match all season someone not named Hillary English or Ruby Osawey led the team in that category. Sophomore Bruna Torres led the team with 19 digs. Nur Yaren Turkmenoglu was third on the team in kills with her 12 while also adding 31 assists and three blocks. Aneesa Thompson led the defensive attack with five on the match.

Game Two vs. Otero Junior College | 3-1 W

The Conquistadors completed their two-match sweep in the Centennial State with a victory over the Otero Junior College Rattlers that proved to mean a little bit more for head coach Jordan Bruere in her return to her old stomping grounds.

The two teams traded 25-21 set victories to become deadlocked at 1-1 heading into the third set. The Conquistadors put the pressure on the Rattlers with a 25-21 third set victory. The Conqs finished the job with a 28-26 fourth set thriller to curb an Otero comeback attempt.

Hillary English had one of her signature monster double-doubles with 20 kills and 18 digs. Bruna Torres led the Conqs in digs with 28 while also adding two aces. Nur Yaren Turkmenoglu led the Conquistadors with 43 assists and chipped in three blocks as well.

The two wins move Dodge City to 7-12 on the season and represent their second two-game winning streak of the season.

The Conquistadors are back in action on Monday, March 15^th when they take part in a dual-sport, triple header with the Hutchinson Blue Dragons at the Student Activity Center. The volleyball program kicks off the afternoon with a 3:00 pm CST match with the Blue Dragons. They are followed by women's basketball at 5:30 pm and men's basketball at 7:30 pm. Tickets for the volleyball and basketball games must be bought separately as the Student Activity Center will be cleared for sanitizing purposes in between the volleyball match and the women's basketball game.
