Mid-Plains Invitational: Day 2 Recap

The Lady Conquistadors ended their experience at the Mid-Plains Invitational in McCook, Nebraska with two consecutive losses on Saturday, February 6th.

The Lady Conquistadors fell to Southeast Community College 3-1 in their morning match and lost to the host, McCook Community College, 3-0 in the afternoon.

While those two losses pushed to Lady Conquistadors to 0-4 on the weekend, the return to normalcy of playing in a large tournament was not lost on head coach Jordan Bruere.

"McCook put together an amazing tournament this weekend," said Bruere. "There were 18 teams that came to compete. We were just grateful to be able to compete in a tournament for the first time in over a year because of the circumstances 2020 put on athletics all over the world."

The Lady Conquistadors took their first set of the day against the Southeast Community College Storm by a score of 25-20, but they proceeded to lose the next three 25-22, 25-19, and 25-13.

After sitting out for six hours, the Lady Conquistadors took on the host school McCook Community College in the last matchup of the tournament.

While the Lady Indians took down the Lady Conqs in straight sets, Coach Bruere's squad did not go down without a fight. They battled McCook to a score of 26-24 in the first set and 25-23 in the second, before falling behind too early in the third set and losing 25-16.

The Lady Conquistadors were supposed to play Coach Bruere's former squad, Otero Junior College instead, but the Rattlers weren't able to make it to the tournament so the schedule was adjusted accordingly.

As far as performance goes, the Lady Conquistadors certainly would have liked to win all of their matches this weekend, but Bruere understands there are bigger things at play for this blossoming volleyball program.

"As a team we didn't get the results we were hoping for but we will take this experience and learn from it," Coach Bruere added about her team's performance. "Monday starts a new week as we get back in action to compete in our conference."

The results this weekend dropped the Lady Conqs to 1-6 on the season and 1-2 in KJCCC play.

The Lady Conquistadors get back to KJCCC play tonight, Monday February 8th, as they welcome Butler Community College to the Student Activity Center. The match begins at 6:00 pm CST, fans are welcome, and the doors will open at 5:30 pm CST. For those unable to make the contest, it can be seen live on ConqTV at GoConqs.com.
