Conquistadors Dig Hole Early, Fall in Straight Sets to Hutchinson

The Dodge City Conquistador volleyball team jumped off to a hot start as they took the first two points against perennial powerhouse, Hutchinson Community College.

The Blue Dragons would proceed to rattle off 20 consecutive points, while halting the early Conquistador momentum in its tracks.

Spearheaded by Shadee Briggs' six service aces during that run, the Blue Dragons would go on to win the set 25-5.

The Conquistadors would come closer the next two sets, losing 25-13 in set two and 25-15 in set three, but neither effort would be enough to bring them a set, a feat the program hasn't done since 2018.

In total, the Conquistadors extend their losing streak to the Blue Dragons to 19 matches.

The Conquistadors would push the third set to 19-15, but after a Blue Dragon timeout, Hutchinson came alive to the tune of six consecutive points to close out the match.

"Hutch came out ready to play. They had a solid game plan and they executed it," said head coach Jordan Bruere. "We knew we had to stop number one (SO. Jenna Thorne) and we struggled with executing that game plan. They were more consistent in their serving and passing all night, while we were up and down and that certainly held us back."

Coach Bruere's squad was led by freshman Hillary English's seven kills, followed by sophomore Ruby Osawey's five. Freshman Sina Toroslu was responsible for the only service ace of the night for the Conqs to go with her four blocks.

The Conquistadors fall to 1-7 on the season and 1-3 in KJCCC play. The Blue Dragons move to 7-5 on the year and 3-2 in conference play.

Dodge City is scheduled to be back in action on Monday, February 15th when they welcome the Garden City Broncbusters to the Student Activity Center. The match is slated to begin at 6:30 pm CST. There will be a live stream link available on ConqTV, but fans are encouraged to come out and support the Conqs. Doors will open for the contest at 6:00 pm.
