Lady Conqs Fall Short with Comeback Attempt

Despite a ferocious comeback attempt in the fourth quarter, the Independence Lady Pirates used a strong third quarter to take down the Lady Conquistadors.

After taking a four-point lead into halftime, the Lady Pirates used a 20-8 third quarter advantage to take an eight-point lead by the end of the quarter. Sophomore Pirate guard Maisa Marcal scored seven of her game-high 17 points in the quarter.

The energy in the Student Activity Center seemed to will the Lady Conquistadors back into the contest as the Lady Pirates went 3-10 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to give the Lady Conqs some light. Freshman Keimora Banks scored seven of her 11 points in the quarter, dicing through the Lady Pirate defense to finish at the rim or get to the charity stripe.

The Lady Conqs got down by as many as 13 points early in the quarter, only to battle back and make it a two-point game with 35-seconds left thanks to a Keimora Banks fast-break layup.

Independence made one of two free throws to make it a three-point game, but the Lady Conquistadors weren't able to convert on their last possession as sophomore Emery Maze couldn't get a last second three-point attempt to go down.

"We took a step forward with our play, but we still have things to take care of," said head coach Zach Loll. "We have to continue to work and build on this game. No one is going to feel sorry for us. We have to create our own opportunities."

The Lady Conquistadors were led by Emery Maze's 12 points, three rebounds, and two assists. Banks chipped in her 11 points to go with four rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Sophomore Xenia Cavalle added 10 points, four rebounds, two assists, and three steals. Freshman Timyja Threlkeld dished out six assists to go with her six points, three steals, and four rebounds.

Independence was led by Maisia Marcal's 17 points, two rebounds, three assists, and four steals as she seemed to be the key playmaker late to help the Lady Pirates maintain their lead. Rapuluchi Favor was a lot to handle inside for the Lady Conqs as she scored 14 points and gathered 13 rebounds for a double-double on the night. Mariam Bazyylewicz chipped in 11 points and five rebounds for the Lady Pirates.

The Lady Conquistadors fall to 2-3 on the season and 1-3 in conference play. The Lady Pirates go to 5-1 and 3-1 in KJCCC play.

Dodge City is back in action on Wednesday, February 10^th as they travel to Allen Community College for a conference double header with the girls tipping off first at 6:00 pm CST and the guys game will follow.
