Conquistadors Drop Road Contest to Allen

The Dodge City Conquistadors lost a back and forth contest to the Allen Red Devils last night in Iola, KS.

The Conqs took a one-point lead into halftime despite seven first half threes by the Allen Red Devils, five of which came from freshman Melody Wilfong.

Despite defending the three-point line more efficiently in the second half, the Conquistador adjustments opened up driving lanes for the Red Devils on their way to converting almost as many free throws (16) as the Conquistadors attempted on the night (17).

The Conquistadors, hobbled by turnovers all year, were able to cut back as they only gave the ball up 15 times on the night compared to a season average of 22.5. However, it was an inability to finish around the rim that was led to the demise of the Conqs as they shot 28% (18-65) from the field compared to the 39% (15-39) of the Red Devils.

"We have to put the ball in the basket, plain and simple," said head coach Zach Loll. "When you get 26 more shots off than the other team, you have to convert and finish. We don't have time to feel sorry for ourselves though, we need to get back to work and get ready for Cowley."

The Conquistadors were led by Emery Maze's 14 points to go with her two rebounds. Freshman Keimora Banks showcased an all-around game with 11 points, five rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Xenia Cavalle and Ashley Hopkins both added 6 points each off the bench.

Melody Wilfong did all of her damage in the first half with her 15 points off 5-6 from the three-point line. Wilfong also secured five boards on the night. Freshmen Adji Mbaye and Addison Towe played well off the bench as they scored 16 points and 10 points, respectively. Kiley Biltoft made her impact outside of the scoring column as she had zero points but grabbed 10 rebounds and two steals.

The Conquistadors drop their fourth straight as they move to 2-4 on the year and 1-4 in KJCCC play. The Allen Red Devils break a 10-game losing streak dating back to last season as they move to 1-6 on the year and 1-4 in the conference.

Dodge City is back in action on Saturday, February 13^th as both squads head to Arkansas City for a conference double-header with Cowley College. The women's game is scheduled to tip-off at 5:30 pm CST with the men's game to follow. Both games will be broadcasted live on Cowley Sports Network, but the link will be able to be found on ConqTV at GoConqs.com.
