Lady Conqs Volleyball Fall to #10 Seward County in Straight Sets

Facing the tenth ranked team in the country on the road is no easy task. Facing the tenth ranked team in the country who are coming off of three losses in their last five matches make that task all the more difficult.

The Lady Conquistadors proved they belonged early but became overmatched by the relentlessness of the Seward County Lady Saints late in sets as the Lady Conqs fell 3-0 on Wednesday night.

Right off the bus, the Lady Conqs were on the offensive trying to challenge Seward early as the first set featured 11 ties and five lead changes. The Lady Saints were able to out-kill Dodge City 17-9 on their way to a 25-22 first set victory.

That was the closest the Lady Conquistadors would get as they dropped the next two sets 25-16 and 25-21. The second set featured Seward jumping out to a 14-9 lead early before finishing on a 11-7 run. The Lady Conqs got back to challenging the Lady Saints in the third set with several long volleys only to see the home team pull away late.

"We came out fighting against a very solid Seward team," said head coach Jordan Bruere. "Our scout held true, but we were not able to consistently make the adjustments that we needed until late in set three."

Sophomore Ruby Osawey led the Lady Conquistadors as she flirted with a double-double of nine kills and eight digs. Freshman Hillary English chipped in 10 kills and libero Bruna Torres had 21 digs on the evening. Sophomore Sina Toroslu added three blocks on the night.

The Lady Conquistadors are back in action with four matches this weekend at the Mid-Plains Invitational hosted by McCook Community College. Coach Bruere's squad will battle North Platte Community College and Casper College on Friday, February 5^th. They will follow that with matches on Saturday, February 6^th against Southeast Community College and Otero Junior College, Bruere's former team.
