Cloud County Uses Strong Third Quarter to Down Lady Conquistadors

After a back and forth first half, the Lady Conquistadors took a 7-point deficit into halftime. Though the Lady Conqs scored the first two points of the second half to cut the lead to five, it was the closest the score would get the rest of the evening.

Cloud County used a 23-12 advantage on the quarter, including a 9-0 run, to push their lead up to 18 heading into the final 10 minutes. The Lady T-Birds cruised in the fourth quarter on their way to a 73-51 victory.

With both teams shooting less than 40% in the first half, it was the Lady T-Birds who opted for less threes and more layups as they shot 52% in the second half.

Cloud County sophomore standout Le'Yanna McGinnis scored 16 of her game-high 25 points in the quarter to serve as the difference-maker coming out of halftime.

McGinnis, who averaged 21.5 points per game heading into the contest, was held largely in check in the first half but used a plethora of post moves to finish around the basket and get to the free throw line in the third quarter.

In a game that featured 48 turnovers, it was the Lady T-Birds who capitalized as they turned 26 Conquistador turnovers into 25 points.

"We need to have more pride in the way we play the game," said head coach Zach Loll. "We might not make every shot but we have to defend, rebound, and take care of the controllables. The one thing I know to be true is we have to continue to work every day to improve."

The Lady Conquistadors were led by sophomore Emery Maze's 11 points and three rebounds. Two freshmen Keimora Banks and Ashley Hopkins added eight points apiece with Banks chipping in five rebounds and a team-high two assists.

The Lady T-Birds were led by Le'Yanna McGinnis' 25 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Rori Cox added 10 points and Derin Akdeniz came off the bench to pour in 15 points, including three triples.

The Lady Conquistadors fall to 2-2 on the season and 1-2 in KJCCC play while the Lady T-Birds move to 3-1 and 2-1.

The Conquistadors are back in action on Saturday, February 6th as they welcome the Independence Pirates in a conference double-header. The day will begin with the women's game tipping off at 1:00 pm CST, and the men immediately following. A conference vote on Monday, February 1st gave KJCCC schools the opportunity to allow fans at 25% capacity. Stay tuned to our social media for updates but both contests will still be live streamed on ConqTV!
