Slow Start to Second Half Downs Conquistadors

The Dodge City Conquistadors fell to the Garden City Broncbusters in the rivalry game by a score of 84-79 on Saturday afternoon.

After taking a five-point lead at 43-38 off the strength of three Dhieu Deing free throws with 19:35 to play in the second half, the Garden City Broncbusters responded with a 24-7 run over the course of the next six minutes to take a 62-50 lead with 13:06 to play.

The quick-strike Conquistadors were certainly not out of the contest as they battled back with their own 23-9 run to take a 73-71 lead capped by a DJ Warren fast break dunk.

The game would come down to crunch time and it was the Garden City Broncbusters, led by Jaduhkiss Soto, who made big plays late. Soto scored nine of his game-high 22 points in the last 4:40 of the game, including a three-pointer with 0:32 seconds left to break a 79-79 tie and put the Broncbusters up three-points.

The Conquistadors had two looks to tie the game on the next possession after a Walyn Napper three-point attempt was rebounded by Roger McFarlane and dished out to Tyler Stallworth who missed with 0:18 seconds left.

Garden City's Mohamed Diarra missed the front end of his one-and-one, once again opening the door for Dodge City. After a timeout to get a play drawn, the Conquistadors got sophomore sharpshooter Dhieu Deing open for a deep three on the right wing, only to have the shot fall short and rebounded by the visiting team. With Diarra at the line again, he knocked down both free throws this time to produce the game's final score of 84-79.

"We simply weren't ready to compete and play, and when you aren't ready to play in this league, you aren't going to win," said head coach Jake Williams. "I was proud of our performance from some of our players off the bench. They brought us a nice spark to try and give us a chance to win this game. Our leadership has to improve and will continue to improve. All of our focus shifts to a good Colby team we see on Wednesday."

Once again, Walyn Napper led the Conquistadors in the scoring column on Saturday with his 17-point effort, while also adding four rebounds, five assists, and two steals. However, it was Tyler Stallworth and Emmanuel Jones off the bench who provided the sparks when the Conquistadors needed it most. Stallworth scored 16 points on the afternoon, a season high, including 4-8 from beyond the arc. He also contributed six rebounds and four assists. Freshman Emmanuel Jones scored 13 points, 11 in the first half, including a 3-4 output from beyond the arc. Second leading scorer Dhieu Deing couldn't find his stroke, going 1-9 from the field but still added six rebounds and nine assists to go with his six points.

Garden City was led by Jaduhkiss Soto's 22 points, including 16 points after intermission. Denver Jones, the team's leading scorer, carried the load in the first half scoring 11 of his 16 points while also adding five assists. Mohamed Diarra came off the bench for a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Dodge City falls to 7-4 on the season and 6-4 in KJCCC play. Garden City moves to 4-4 and 2-4 in conference play.

The Conquistadors are back in action on Wednesday, March 3rd when they travel to Colby, KS to take on the Colby Trojans in a conference double-header with the women's program. The games are set for 5:30 pm and 7:30 pm CST and they will be live streamed.
