Conquistadors Put on Offensive Clinic in Route of Mavericks

The Dodge City Conquistador men's basketball program took down the Northwest Kansas Tech Mavericks by a score of 115-81 on Saturday afternoon in the Student Activity Center.

Fueled by a high-speed style of play that allowed the Conquistadors to get out in transition, Dodge City opened the game on a 22-4 run and never looked back.

The Conqs extended their lead to 38-16 by the 10:00 media timeout. The lead would only continue to grow as Dodge City forced the Mavericks in 13 first half turnovers and saw their lead reach a peak of 37-points thanks to a dunk by fan favorite Dylan "The Big French Fry" Gory with 1:19 to play in the first half.

The Conquistadors had their best shooting half of the season as they went 27-37 (73%) from the field, including 8-16 (50%) from behind the arc.

After leading 68-33 at intermission, the two squads played the second half even up as the Conquistadors saw their lead grow as high as 40 while never dipping below 28 points.

When the final buzzer sounded, the Conquistadors held a 34-point lead, 115-81.

"It was great to be playing back in the Dome," said head coach Jake Williams. "I thought our energy and effort was really good, especially in the first half. We forced a lot of turnovers which created a lot of fast break opportunities, and we did a great job sharing the ball in the half court. Our team was excited to be back and it showed. This was a fun one but now our focus is on a tough road game at Pratt."

Dodge City ended the contest with a 62% (42-68) field goal percentage and a 48% (12-25) percentage from three. The Conqs had assists on 28 of those 42 field goals.

Dhieu Deing led a group six Conquistadors who scored in double-figures with his 16 points to go with five rebounds and seven assists. Marlow Gilmore Jr. was a close second with 15 points that included several highlight reel dunks. Other double-figure scorers include Mike Marsh's 13 points (four rebounds, four assists), Quindarius Thomas' 12 points, Oumar Koureissi's 11 points, and Tyler Stallworth's 10 points (five rebounds, three assists). Sophomore point guard Walyn Napper only scored seven points, but also added four rebounds, seven assists, and four steals.

The Mavericks put four guys of their own in double-figures, led by Jacari Chambers' 24 points off an efficient 63% (10-16) from the field. Hantz Louis-Jeune added 15, Malike Lacewell scored 14, and Arthur Cox chipped in 12 points.

Dodge City improves to 8-4 on the season and 7-4 in the KJCCC as they continue to keep pace with the Hutchinson Blue Dragons for the KJCCC West lead. Northwest Kansas Tech falls to 0-10 on the season and in conference play.

The Conquistadors are back in action on Wednesday, March 10 when they travel down the road to Pratt, Kansas to take on the Pratt Beavers in a KJCCC double header with the women's game starting at 5:30 pm CST. Fans are welcome, but make sure to check Pratt's athletic website for their opposing fan policies.
