Conquistador Volleyball Loses Hard Fought Match with Butler in Five Sets

Jockeying for position in the KJCCC West standings, the Dodge City Conquistadors fought like it as they took the Butler Grizzlies to five sets, losing 3-2.

The Conquistadors took the first two sets, 25-21 and 25-23, before losing the next three 26-24, 26-24 and 15-13.

The first two sets brought 19 ties and 15 lead changes between the two, but it was two Conquistador runs that sparked the set wins.

Down 21-18 in the first set, the Conqs used a 7-0 run to take the set 25-21. With the score at 23-21, a crucial miscommunication by the Grizzlies led Dodge City to set point where they took the opener on the following play.

Set two saw the Grizzlies race out to a 10-3 lead. Coach Jordan Bruere looked to make a change, putting sophomore Maria Fernanda Alcantrara in the game for the first time. She pulled the right strings as Alcantrara had two kills en-route to a 9-0 run and a 12-10 lead. After a tie at 15-15, the lead would change hands four more times. With the score at another deadlock, 24-24, a diving save by Nur Yaren Turkmenoglu led to a Hillary English kill which gave the Conquistadors an opportunity to take set two the following point off another English kill.

Set three was a game of runs that began with a Butler 5-0 lead. The Conquistadors answered with an 8-3 run to tie the score at 8, which prompted a 5-0 Grizzly move to make the score 13-8. The Conquistadors would battle back to tie the score on a Butler service error at 24-24. Butler powered their way with two consecutive kills to take the set 26-24.

Butler once again opened set four with a run of 5-1 to take the sets first lead. But the Conquistadors had an answer with a 7-2 scoring advantage to take an 8-7 lead. Down 22-16, the Conqs used an 8-2 run to tie the score at 24, but two consecutive Conquistador errors allowed Butler to push the match to a fifth set.

Set five saw the Conquistadors strike first at 1-0 but that would be their last lead of the match as the Grizzlies would counter with a 9-3 run to go up 9-4. The Conquistadors would get within one point on five separate occasions in the set, including 13-14, but a Grizzly kill would end the set at 15-13.

"Last night was a tough one," remarked head coach Jordan Bruere. "Being up 2-0 on a talented team and not coming out on top is tough. That being said, I am very proud of this team. We have started to find our way in this conference and have started to compete and push every team that steps on the court with us. We did a good job of fighting our way back into sets when Butler got up. Our defense was solid with three of our girls getting over 15 digs."

The Conquistadors were led in kills by the duo of Hillary English (19) and Ruby Osawey (16). Nur Yaren Turkmenoglu had a double-double with 43 assists and 26 digs while adding in three blocks for good measure. Sophomore Bruna Torres also added 32 digs.

"We are playing very well as a team and things are starting to click at the right time for us," Bruere added. "We begin the second round of conference play on Monday and are looking forward to competing with each team again."

Dodge City is back in action on Monday, March 1st when they travel to Colby, Kansas to take on the Colby Trojans and begin the second round of KJCCC play. The match is slated to begin at 6:30 pm CST and a live stream link will be available.
