Conqs Take Season Series with Indy in Straight Set Victory
 
Thursday night marked the first time all season that the Dodge City Community College volleyball program was able to play in their home gym in front of their home fans.

The ladies responded accordingly sweeping the Independence Pirates in straight sets by scores of 25-15, 25-11, and 25-15.

A 6-1 run to open the match set the tone of the evening before an Independence timeout. Following the timeout, the closest the Pirates would make the score was 12-8 but the Hillary English led Conquistador attack was too much for the visiting team. English contributed seven of her match-high 16 kills in the first set to secure a quick start for the Conqs.

The second set was uniform to the first as the Conquistadors again opened up on a 6-1 run, this time following through to make it 10-2 before an Independence timeout. A Hillary English missile made the score 16-3, prompting Indy to use their final timeout of the second set. Fan favorites Shade Torres and Grace Harris saw some action in set two much to the delight of the rowdy Conquistador student section as they roared the squad onto a 25-11 victory.

The third set provided the Conquistadors with their biggest deficit of the match, a 3-1 lead by the Independence Pirates. Once again, English had all the answers for the Conqs as she evened the score at 3-3 with a kill right down the center of the court. The Conquistadors wouldn't trail again as they went on to win the set 25-15.

"We were excited and grateful we got the opportunity to play at home in front of our fans for the first time this season," said head coach Jordan Bruere. "It was a total team effort. We wanted this game to set the tone for us this weekend. Our goal was to serve tough and be more disciplined on defense. I think we did just that, ending the night with 13 aces and a lot of great plays made on the back row."

The Conquistadors were led on the night by Hillary English's 16 kills. Ruby Osawey added four kills and eight digs. Freshman Nur Yaren Turkmenoglu was all over the court for the Conquistadors with five aces, seven digs, and 24 assists to help power the charge.

Dodge City is back in action tonight, February 26th as they welcome the Butler Grizzlies to town for a 5:30 pm CST match. Fans are welcome once again but a live stream link will be made available. Tickets can be purchased here.
